Telemann’s rarely played Messias from 1759 dispenses with the biblical text and manages without the usual evangelist, obligatory large choir or da capo arias in favour of through-composition. The Consecration cantata for the Rellingen Church (1756) is Telemann’s artistic response to the largest natural catastrophe of the 18th century. On the first of November 1755, an earthquake destroyed two thirds of Lisbon and about 30,000 people lost their lives.

“Master of galant chamber music, Telemann treats the story of Messiah as he does a consecration poem. There are many charming moments here, due largely to the instrumentalists.”
