Demantius was a contemporary of Monteverdi. He wrote 69 motets, most of which are based on the appropriate gospel reading. In his St. John Passion, he shows in dramatic form that it was still possible well after 1600 to compose in an expressive and dramatic way without abandoning the old rules entirely.
