A new and compelling recording of Brahms’s four symphonies. This recording was made in the Bolzano auditorium which corresponds in size to the general concert situation as regards space in Brahms’s day. Consequently Gustav Kuhn does not have double woodwind and employs a relatively small number of strings. By using this ‘original’ number of instruments we hear an increased transparency of the fine symphonic texture as well as a heightened intensity of expressive playing.
