Silfra – 12 evocative, phenomenally intriguing tracks that span a breadth of emotions and styles, ranging from the exotic to the serene, from the atmospheric to the playful.

An exploratory improvisation project by Hilary Hahn, “one of the greatest violinists in the world today” (Washington Post), and acclaimed German “prepared piano” artist/composer Hauschka (Volker Bertelmann).

“When you listen to this record, you are hearing the music the first time it was played. There were no retakes. These are the moments that brought these ideas to life.”

A tribute to an otherworldly landscape, Silfra, that inspired the two musicians – ambitious and free-spirited.

The record is produced by Valgeir Sigurðsson, who has worked with a diverse array of artists ranging from Björk to Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy.

Martin Longley

“Hahn and Hauschka’s music has an organic mechanical motion, emerging out of a world that could have been created by Jules Verne or H.G. Wells. There’s a strutting roboticism, but all parts are made woody, wrinkled, leathery, walnut-crinkled and creaking like old bones.”

The Independent

***

“a series of fascinating improvisations... Particularly effective are "North Atlantic", with its rhapsodic violin over a poignant two-note piano figure, and the 12-minute "Godot", an eerily melancholy alliance of hypnotic industrial pulse and keening solitude.”

The Times

****

“Worlds meet symbolically and literally in this dazzling place. Hahn and Hauschka improvised these 12 tracks on the spot in response. Much is eerily beautiful, making use of ethereal multi-trackings and wispy violin overtones...Not lyrical listening, but haunting, quirky and like nothing else.”
