Born in 1908 Herman D. Koppel, represented the oldest generation in contemporary Danish music. Because of his Jewish origins, he was a refugee during World War II, and the war years left deep marks on him. This finds expression in the oratorio Moses, which is considered one of the principal works of the post-war period. Since his debut in 1930 he was also admired as a virtuoso pianist.
