The Danish composer Finn Høffding (1899-1997) was a friend of Carl Nielsen and a teacher of Vagn Holmboe, thus forming a connecting link between the two great symphonists.
This CD presents the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Frank Cramer's world première recording of Høffding's rarely performed Third Symphony from 1930 and the slightly later fantasias for orchestra Evolution and Det er ganske vist.
The repertoire has been specially selected for the CD by Høffding's pupil and lifelong friend, the composer Per Nørgård.

“Stylistically, Høffding's music lies somewhere between Nielsen, its bedrock, and Holmboe, with a neo-classical overlay betraying Hindemith's influence...The Jena Philharmonic's playing under Frank Cramer's sympathetic direction is a delight, and Dacapo's sound is excellent. These performances repay repeated listenings, the hallmark of a splendid disc.”
