Gramophone Classical Music Guide

2010

“These two most delightful of Bach's secular cantatas here receive sparkling performances fully alive to the humour and invention of the music. The Coffee Cantata illustrates a family altercation over a current enthusiasm, the drinking of coffee. A narrator tells the story while the soprano and bass soloists confront each other in a series of delightful arias. Thomas brings out the crabby dyspeptic side of Schlendrian's character imaginatively and Kirkby makes a charming minx-like Lieschen. Covey-Crump's sweet light tenor acts as a good foil. The Peasant Cantata also takes the form of a dialogue, here between a somewhat dull and simple young man and his sweetheart Mieke, a girl who intends to better herself. Through the 24 short movements Bach conjures up a wonderfully rustic picture with some vivid dance numbers and rumbustious ritornellos. The soloists' nicely rounded characterisations emerge with great humour and Hogwood directs with vitality and sprightly rhythmic control. The recording is excellent.”
