One of the very last recordings of baroque-pioneer conductor Alan Curtis (1934-2015), a supreme Handelian conductor and scholar. Alan Curtis, described by the New York Times’ as “one of the great scholar-musicians of recent times”, conducts a brilliant cast including German soprano star Christiane Karg and the Italian mezzo soprano Romina Basso. Christiane Karg is one of those fascinating voices of our time. She is certainly one of today’s most interesting German singers with an international profile. Many of her recordings such as “Scene!”, “Heimliche Aufforderung” or “Portrait” (for Berlin Classics) have been internationally acclaimed and were big commecial successes. A selection of arias, duets and instrumental pieces from Handel masterworks such as Semele, Hercules, Partenope, a.o. With liner notes by the british Handel specialist Dr. David Vickers. Incl. a dedication by mystery writer DONNA LEON, who was a close friend to Alan Curtis. Booklet texts in three languages (German, English, French).

As a specialist of baroque repertoire, Romina Basso has featured on several prizewinner Naïve Vivaldi Edition recordings and recently on Baroque Divas and Pergolesi's Adriano in Siria for Decca, Lamento and Voces de Sefarad as solo albums. She has a warm, well-focused mezzo voice and a highly engaging acting style, an ideally dark voice.

BBC Music Magazine

January 2017

****

“Led by Curtis at the keyboard, soprano Christiane Karg and contralto Romina Basso drew inner character out of Handel’s score. Singing Orfeo’s aria, Karg floats a motionless straight tone – a vocal production unusual for her – over the band’s stumbling dotted rhythms, as sorrow alters Orfeo’s experience of time. As the sex kitten Semele, Karg is the essence of coquetry, wilfully refusing to follow the band”

Gramophone Magazine

December 2016

“As ever, [Karg] ‘lives’ each of the characters intensely: in the blanched, grief-etched tone she brings to Orfeo’s lament from Parnasso in festa, in Cupid’s seductive ‘’Come, Zephyrs, come’…[Basso’s] firm, slightly androgynous mezzo and fiery temperament immediately impress…she and Karg make vivid, well-matched duet partners…an enjoyable, unclichéd programme”

Sunday Times

6th November 2016

“Alan Curtis’s last recording gathers a miscellany from English and Italian vocal works under the rubric of “mythology”...Karg’s agile No, no, I’ll take no less, from Semele, and Basso’s Where shall I fly?, from Hercules, are brilliantly sung in excellent English.”
