Often referred to as the greatest tenor America ever produced, Richard Tucker spent the entire three decades of his career as a member of the New York Metropolitan Opera, giving only a few guest performances in Europe. This 10-CD set includes a wealth of live recordings, and documents the extraordinary quality of Tucker‘s voice while at the same time conveying an overwhelming impression of the ensemble’s variety during the New York Met’s “golden years”.

Luciano Pavarotti wrote in the foreword to James Drake‘s biography about Tucker: “His voice was not only beautiful - shimmering, silvery and very powerful - but also incredibly enduring…his technique as close to perfect as one can get.”

Focusing almost exclusively on Italian repertoire, the set includes selections from major operas by Verdi and Puccini in particular, as well as Giordano’s Andrea Chénier and Ponchielli’s La Gioconda, some Donizetti, “Cav and Pag”, single arias by Flotow and Meyerbeer, and finally a disc of French opera with music by Bizet, Gounod, Massenet and others.
