Il Corsaro is still one of Verdi’s less known and performed operas. Chronologically speaking, it belongs to the famous ”years in the galley”, even though it dates from a period (the autumn of 1848) when the composer’s name, in Italy, could already be considered established. The young Verdi completed this opera to fulfil a contract obligation, therefore working without much enthusiasm. As a consequence this work has a number of unoriginal moments, which are however redeemed by many fine and poignant pages; the libretto’s concise dramatic action imposes an incisive and pressing rhythm to the music writing. In the cast is the renowned baritone Renato Bruson.
