On 26th April 1952 the audience of the Florence Maggio Musicale Festival witnessed the revival of one of Gioacchino Rossini’s operatic masterpieces - Armida, written in 1817 for Isabella Colbran and first staged at the San Carlo Theatre in Naples. The star of this unforgettable evening was Maria Callas, then at the very peak of her magnificent vocal abilities. With rigorous sound remastering, our double CD brings back the recording of that memorable performance, one of the finest moments in the operatic career of Callas, who was never again to appear in this congenial role.
