Wim Mertens - Receptacle

Receptacle comprises 8 new compositions played by an ensemble of 18 musicians, 17 of whom are female, accompanied by Wim Mertens at the piano. Wim Mertens comments: “For a long time I have been fascinated by the question of whether a score played by female musicians is different in sound and interpretation. I discovered a different and more direct approach in the reproduction of the sound, without 'as ifs'.” The Music of Wim Mertens reflects the meaning of the word Receptacle: natural matrix and interconnectedness of all things; devoid of all forms; community of locus; a strength of many feelings fortifying each other; the third element. And more: unmeasured nature; the void; mere chance; manifoldness of the many into the unit of the one. All instruments of the normal classical orchestra are present in Receptacle : flute, oboe, clarinet and bassoon, trumpet, trombone, tuba, horn, violin, viola, cello, double bass, percussion, completed with soprano saxophone, guitar and vocals.
