Diana Damrau’s reputation as the world’s leading coloratura soprano has been built on her extraordinary technical virtuosity, her sensitive musicianship and her acute psychological insight. In Katie Mitchell’s sometimes radical production of Lucia di Lammermoor from the Royal Opera House, she is, as the Financial Times wrote, 'brilliantly convincing'. Award winning director Katie Mitchell took a revisionist approach to the drama, updating the action to the mid-19th century and applying a feminist slant as she added new and unexpected elements. Mitchell also made extensive use of a ‘split screen’ effect on the stage, counterpointing two different pieces of action at key moments.

The staging is over-stuffed but it is not stupid or careless…Minute alterations in the textures of Donizetti’s orchestration are brilliantly clear. Were you not already persuaded that the opera is a masterpiece, this should change your mind…Damrau is magnificent. Her attention to the text is unerring and her pianissimos beautifully spun. Castronovo burns at a slower rate, reserving his vocal and poetic energies for a heartrending ‘Tu spiegasti l’ali’.

This is a production that divides opinion. What’s not in doubt is the quality of the dramatic performance Mitchell draws from Diana Damrau, who is compelling in the title-role…Castronovo is a decent Edgardo, if a touch plain vocally, but Ludovic Tézier stands out, his firm baritone and smooth legato making him a splendid Enrico.
