“Schlömer concentrates wholly on characterisation and deft movement; magic effects are cleverly, unliterally reinvented. Again, this feels true to the work's Greek dramatic heritage - melodramatic actions, as it were, is wholly banished. The cast have clearly rehearsed carefully together; there are no "star" turns, and all are well within their roles vocally. Zagrosek's cool, carefully pulsed conducting suits this score well, and the filming feels better rehearsed than some of the later cycle.”
