Directed for Stage by Ermanno Olmi & Stage Design & Costumes: Arnaldo Pomodoro
In this recording Riccardo Chailly directs Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera for the first time in his function as General Music Director of the Leipzig Oper on the 2nd of November 2005.
Un ballo in maschera is as exciting as a thriller, but with a passion that can only be experienced in a Verdi opera. It stands to reason that only a man of equal passion would have the ability of bringing this spectacle to the stage adequately.

“The producer Ermanno Olmi... stick[s] pretty closely to the indicated stage directions and conveying plenty of dramatic interplay between the characters.[Pisapia simply stands and delivers in always mellifluous tones, often ignoring Verdi’s demands for ppp although he displays a pleasing mezza voce in places...Tugi displays a good solid voice, a willingness to sing quietly when Verdi requests it, and a penetrating lower register.”
“traditional costumes and stylized sets...[Talgi] has a pure, warm soprano, finely controlled in her legato singing, and Franco Vassallo sings magnificently, making his defying aria, Eri tu, a powerful climax, helped by Riccardo Chailly's inspired conducting.”
The Opera Critic
“Chailly's conducting left no wish unfulfilled, managing to conjure such a voluptuous sound from the orchestra that had not been heard from this pit in a while, sumptuous rumbling as well as transparency and lightness where necessary. A gripping iridescence between drama and grotesquerie was matched with great care for detailed phrasing, never losing sight of the whole. Orchestra as well as singers corresponded to their best.”
