String Quintet in C major, D956

DVD1: This DVD presents a very original program with hardly ever performed pieces and Kremer’s own version for string orchestra of Schubert famous Quintet which makes it particularly attractive.

DVD2: It was in this spirit, that his fine young ensemble Kremerata Baltica presents music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart coupled with two contemporary works inspired by the great composer on this DVD. Recorded at the Salzburg Mozart Festival in 2002, the chamber orchestra, played Estonian Arvo Pärt’s “Mozart-Adagio” composed in the mid 1990s and “Moz-Art à la Haydn,” a humorous reflection on the two Austrian masters by Russian composer Alfred Schnittke.

DVD3: His return to J. S. Bach’s partitas is a major event as Kremer’s first recording of these works was released almost a quarter of a century ago, and he hasn’t played the partitas in public for over twenty years. Those who have followed Gidon Kremer’s artistic development over the past 25 years will note how much his tone and articulation have changed.

For more than 40 years Gidon Kremer has been one of the world´s foremost violinists and - thanks to his insatiable curiosity and quest for new stimuli - one of today´s most intriguing musical personalities.

In 1997 he gave himself a special present for his birthday: his own ensemble, made up of the best young musicians from the Baltic countries - his Kremerata Baltica. “For me it´s extremely important that I and my Kremerata Baltica identify with the music of our time.”

This Edition is an outstanding example of his uncommonly extensive repertoire, featuring some of the greatest pieces ever composed from Bach to the whole new world of thrilling 20th century works.
