Twenty years ago musicologists were not aware that Schubert's Tenth existed. The detective story leading to its revelation is told by Brian Newbould in the booklet of this CD. The manuscript was discovered in a folio in Vienna containing no fewer than three uncompleted Schubert symphonies including No 10, which the composer was working on when he died. It is therefore his very last music. Professor Newbould's work involved deciphering Schubert's sketches and then reconstructing the work and orchestrating it. In three movements, the symphony is a wonder, with a first movement containing one of Schubert's loveliest melodies, and a sombre and Mahlerian slow movement of great poignancy. The CD also contains the other two fragmentary symphonies from the same foliotwo movements of one started in 1818, and four movements of another dating from 1821. To hear 'new' Schubert in 1997 is a wondrous thing. There is much lovely and so-far unknown music here. The quality of the Tenth should easly assure it of a place in the repertory.

In fact there are six unfinished Schubert symphonies: there are two whole movement expositions for D615, torsos of three movements and a nearly complete Scherzo for D708a, and enough sketch material for Brian Newbould to attempt a complete conjectural reconstruction of D936a, the symphony Schubert began writing in the last weeks of his life. Inevitably some will ask, why bother? Well, apart from the increase in the sense of wonder at Schubert's sheer productivity, there's some wonderful music here, especially the slow movement of D936a, desolate and warmly consoling by turns. As a whole, D936a suggests that, even at this late stage, Schubert was still thinking in terms of new developments.
The concluding third movement, contrapuntally fusing elements of scherzo and finale, is like nothing else in Schubert – or any other composer of the classical period. Newbould has had to do some guessing here, but the results are mostly strikingly authoritative. The performances carry conviction and the recordings are atmospheric yet detailed. Altogether a fascinating disc.
