One of the most visited places on Earth, Notre Dame cathedral is celebrating 850 years in 2013. It obviously has had a long tradition of music, especially with its renowned great organs. One of the most notable organists of our time, current owner of the extremely prestigious post of organist of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, Olivier Latry pays tribute to some of his predecessors over the last three centuries, since the organs got their modern structure: Daquin, Balbastre, Beauvarlet-Charpentier, Vierne, Cochereau… The pieces performed in this unique recording were all composed by those extraordinary musicians and reflect more than 300 years of music history.

“This kind of compilation needs to have a good raison d’être to tease my interest, and Olivier Latry’s Trois siècles d’orgue has just that...This programme is a fine souvenir of one of the world’s greatest organs played by one of today’s best organists. The programme is both satisfying in its own right as well as an invitation to explore further, and with a very fine recording it’s also a sonic treat.”

BBC Music Magazine

October 2013

*****

“This is great fun...His elegant booklet note briefly charts the tradition of organ-playing at the cathedral...Latry's playing is, of course, of the highest standard throughout, and the recording is detailed yet natural.”

International Record Review

September 2013

“Latry is a phenomenal interpreter of Messiaen and he creates something of the same sound-world here and in the Preludes of Jean-Pierre Leguay, which, with their irregular rhythms, isolated monodies and birdsong-like flourishes, among other similarities, suit this organ perfectly.”

BBC Music Magazine

October 2013

“Latry delivers with predictable virtuosity and musicianship a well-chosen programme that mixes a few of the usual French suspects with some less commonly-heard repertoire… as well as being thoroughly listenable-to, this is one of the (rather few) organ CDs I would happily give to an acquaintance unfamiliar with the instrument’s arcana”

Organists Review

“Latry delivers with predictable virtuosity and musicianship a well-chosen programme that mixes a few of the usual French suspects with some less commonly-heard repertoire… as well as being thoroughly listenable-to, this is one of the (rather few) organ CDs I would happily give to an acquaintance unfamiliar with the instrument’s arcana.”
