An incriminating love-letter from the Queen of Ruritania to Rudolph Rassendyll, the hero of The Prisoner of Zenda, is intercepted by the dastardly villain Rupert of Hentzau, who is intent on causing trouble for the Royal Family. Rassendyll is forced to return to save the day and again assume his impersonation of King Rudolph. Once more he is embroiled in a world of deception, intrigue, deadly swordfights and strained loyalties, but will he be able to restore peace to Ruritania a second time?

Rupert of Hentzau (Unabridged)

Chapter 1

Yet Sapt was in the right about him.

As time went on, the first impulse…

I left the queen and went to prepare…

To lay on the king the full blame…

Chapter 2: A Station Without a Cab

We arrived punctual to our appointed time.

'Well, there's no help for it,' said I…

On either side my hands were still pinned fast.

Then came Rischenheim's voice again…

Chapter 3: Again to Zenda

My battered head ached most consumedly.

Rudolf came, calm and serene.

'Come, Fritz,' he cried…

He was hardly gone…

Chapter 4: An Eddy on the Moat

The king rose with a yawn, and bade the colonel good-night.

Sapt ran on. Opening the gate that led to the bridge…

Yet there was in truth nothing strange…

Nevertheless it was a quarter of an hour…

Chapter 5: An Audience of The King

At ten minutes to eight o'clock…

The count advanced, bowing low…

Now Rudolf played his part well.

Bernenstein looked in again.

Now Sapt was resolved not to leave Rischenheim alone…

Inside the room, Rischenheim stood…

Chapter 6: The Task of The Queen's Servants

'I doubt if it would bring me,' grinned old Sapt…

A few moments later Bernenstein returned.

'Will it last forever?' she asked…

Thus she turned away, letting him go.

The queen made no sound…

Chapter 7: The Message of Simon the Huntsman

I hardly stayed to form a resolution.

'I wish a customer had come in…'

Now, after all our stir and runnings to and fro…

'Well, Simon, where is the king?' she asked…

'Suppose Rupert -' The Constable of Zenda broke in…

Chapter 8: The Temper of Boris the Hound

Suddenly Sapt, turning his head for the first time…

I looked where his hand now was.

'If the king asks more, tell him I have the packet…'

'You damned fool!' roared Rupert…

Chapter 9: The King in the Hunting Lodge

An hour or more had passed since our discovery…

So the plan was made.

The stableman had led the horse away…

However, not why the queen went, but that she had gone…

But at this moment I saw a man on the platform…

Chapter 10: The King in Strelsau

Reluctantly and ruefully the fat fellow stepped out…

Both to my wife and to Rudolf himself…

Mr. Rassendyll asked no better than to meet his enemy…

Along they went; soon they came…

The half then, at least, of Rosa's attachment…

Chapter 11: What the Chancellor's Wife Saw

Now, it was plain that Bauer…

As he spoke Rudolf turned to knock at the door…

At this moment he heard horses' hoofs behind him.

A doubtful, puzzled little smile spread…

Flight was impossible.

Chapter 12: Before Them All!

There was nothing that Rudolf more desired…

Bernenstein, however, persuaded her to go…

A moment of absolute silence followed…

But every moment bore its peril…

Chapter 13: A King Up His Sleeve

The old woman shook her head.

Rischenheim was staring at him…

Then he walked across to the window…

Starting from this point, his audacious mind…

Chapter 14: The News Comes to Strelsau

The door of the room opened…

'Listen,' said Rudolf.

The three were standing round me…

Rudolf turned to me.

Chapter 15: A Pastime For Colonel Sapt

'In fact, sir, we were all overcome with fatigue…'

Sapt was still smiling in grim amusement…

Then and there they set about what they had to do.

'Yes, Simon, your brother will be here…'

Chapter 16: A Crowd in the Konigstrasse

I did not know what she intended…

As she rose, Rischenheim made a quick impulsive step…

Our way did not lie by the house…

The fellow whom I saw…

Chapter 17: Young Rupert and the Play-actor

'I've come to see the Count of Hentzau,' Rudolf continued.

'Ah, the play-actor!' said he…

But he had overshot the mark this time.

A sudden flush swept over Rupert of Hentzau's face.

Ignorant of the mind and heart of young Rupert…

Chapter 18: The Triumph of The King

The device that he adopted was nicely chosen.

I looked again at Rupert.

Moved by some impulse, I walked to the window…

Bernenstein had more presence of mind than I.

Young Bernenstein interrupted his cheering…

Chapter 19: For Our Love and Her Honour

'He'll take the throne,' I cried triumphantly.

The minutes seemed very long as we waited…

'In an hour I must be gone from here,' began Rudolf.

We rushed to the door of the room where he was.

He spoke firmly and coldly…

Chapter 20: The Decision of Heaven

Then he faltered; but he had not fallen.

'There's a chance for you…'

It might be that there was little reason in her words.

But now our attention was again diverted.

He opened his eyes, and his lips bent in a smile.

Chapter 21: The Coming of the Dream

A distant faint hum of voices reached us.

Times change for all of us.
