“Halasz leads a bright and vigorous account of the Overture, with the clarion trumpet cutting through the fog about 2 minutes in and some soulful playing from the oboe farther on. Both the Minuets are broadly paced but smoothly played. ... Even more valuable (given its relative rarity on disc) is the suite derived by Strauss from his disarmingly autobiographical opera Intermezzo, which, to judge from the notes, is the opposite side of the coin from the Symphonia Domestica... Halasz is so captivating in both scores that this new Naxos is easily worth the price.”
