Spohr - String Quintet Nos. 5 & 6

Spohr’s Quintet No. 5 in G minor of 1838 followed upon the tragic death of the composer’s daughter Therese at the age of nineteen. The initial movements are dark and sombre in mood, but by the end the atmosphere has become more carefree. The Quintet No. 6 in E minor was one of a series of instrumental pieces he wrote following the composition of his last opera Die Kreuzfahrer.
