These youthful chamber works by Richard Strauss, not widely represented on disc, are filled with sparkling inventiveness and lyricism. Written at the age of thirteen, his charming Piano Trio No. 1 follows the models of Mozart and Beethoven, and the Piano Trio No. 2 of a year later ventures beyond these sophisticated foundations. Described by The Strad as ‘exemplary’, the award-winning Amelia Piano Trio is one of the most sought after ensembles of its generation. The Trio’s recording of works by John Harbison (8559243) was hailed for ‘performances as fantastic as the compositions themselves’ (allmusic.com).

The Guardian

“ The Trios take Viennese classics as their models: the First, in A, sounds like Haydn until it reaches its finale, a swanky pastorale of considerable originality. The more homogeneous Second steers closer to Schubert, echoing his melodic beauty...Nice performances from the Amelia Trio”

BBC Music Magazine

December 2011

“A fascinating collection that casts light on Richard Strauss's early wunderkind period”

MusicWeb International

January 2012

“these are mainly the works of a young teenage boy...this CD will appeal to anyone looking in an unusual place for something tuneful and undemanding... [the Amelia Trio] perform beautifully, with considerable style and great respect for Strauss's youth”
