The Fourth Symphony in E flat major is probably the best loved of all of Bruckner’s symphonies. This live recording made in 2008 in the Great Festival Hall in Salzburg continues the successful Ivor Bolton series. Symphony No.3 (OC722) was a Gramophone Editor’s Choice.
Anton Bruckner: Symphony No. 4 in E flat major, WAB 104, "Romantic" (1886 version, ed. L. Nowak)
I. Bewegt, nicht zu schnell
II. Andante quasi allegretto
III. Scherzo: Bewegt
IV. Finale: Bewegt, doch nicht zu schnell
“The quality that energes in all four movements is delicacy. Bolton has clearly achieved a remarkable rapport with the players and I have never heard this orchestra, whether live or on disc, playing better...No doubt many Brucknerians will miss the rich cushion of string sound that you find in more conventional accounts but arguably a performance on this scale comes closer to what the composer himself would have expected.”
