Petr Eben is considered to be one of the Czech Republic’s leading contemporary composers. He wrote this work in 1954 and it is a symphony with a concertante organ part based on Gregorian Chant. Many of his works rely on Gregorian Chant and folk melodies and the organ was his first love. Gunther Rost has won many international prizes and has specialised in the repertoire of Petr Eben.
Petr Eben: Organ Concerto No. 1, "Symphonia Gregoriana"
I. Moderato - Piu mosso
II. Allegro risoluto
III. Adagio
IV. Allegro vivace
April 2011
“an uncluttered and wholly unpretentious view of a work which most hearing this disc will be encountering for the first time. The Bamberg Symphony Orchestra under Gabriel Feltz are neat and dovetail nicely into Rost's measured virtuosity...there's more than enough here not just to whet the appetite but to make this a performance well worth hearing in its own right.”
