Messner was the Cathedral Kapellmeister in Salzburg and composed some 700 works, including 12 masses, 400 motets, 3 symphonies, 50 choral works and 100 songs. His Salzburg Festival Fanfare introduced and concluded all broadcasts from the festival and became internationally famous.
