This a recording of a real opera rarity. A three act opera with music by Paul Dukas and a libretto by Maurice Maeterlinck. It was premiered in Paris in May 1907 and although it has rarely been performed over the years it is a work containing some Dukas’s most original and inspired work.
“The sumptuousness of the score doesn't quite come across in Bertrand de Billy's performance with the Vienna Radio Symphony. The voices lack allure, too - Deborah Polaski as Ariane seems under pressure at the climaxes, Jane Henschel as the Nurse is slightly underwhelming and Kwangchul Youn is an uncharismatic Bluebeard. Leon Botstein's performance, released last year on Teldec, is preferable.”
