With this CD the series of recordings from the history of the Gewandhaus Orchestra presented by the label querstand in cooperation with the orchestra, MDR radio (MDR Figaro) and the German broadcast archive (Deutsches Rundfunkarchiv – DRA) goes on and decidedly seeks to build bridges from history to the present by contrasting recordings from different times related by their topics.

It contains at the one hand recordings of the Gewandhaus Orchestra from 1939 and 1944. Directed by its that time chief conductor Hermann Abendroth the orchestra recorded for “Deutschlandsender” Beethoven’s 8th Symphony at the end of 1944, whilst “Reichs- sender Leipzig” transmitted at New Year’s Eve 1939 the fourth movement of the composer’s 9th Symphony – directly from the Gewandhaus.

At the other hand it is presented the recording of the first performance of a Gewandhaus Orchestra’s command. Friedrich Cerha’s Paraphrase reflects on the beginning of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony. The interpretation of the Orchestra under today’s Gewand- hauskapellmeister Riccardo Chailly gives an impression of the extraordinary technical and artistic standards of a contemporary ensemble as well as those of modern recording techniques. The acoustic of the historical – which was destroyed in 1944 – and the contemporary Gewandhaus are demonstrated.

Between the two Abendroth recordings another important historical broadcast document is presented: the midnight’s bell of 1939/40 New Year’s Eve of the “Deutsche Glocke am Rhein” at Cologne Cathedral preserved at a radio record.

These recordings have been re-mastered by the German broadcast archive in Frankfurt.

The CD is presented as already the precursors within this series in a hard-cover-book in DVD size. The booklet with its texts and numerous pictures gives impressive views to the music history of Leipzig.
