“A new sonic benchmark – for Bach in and from Leipzig”, this is what the Leipziger Volkszeitung called the final concert of the 2006 Bachfest, in which the Thomanerchor Leipzig had performed the Mass in B minor. Rondeau Production has finally re-issued a recording of the Mass. On this venture, the Thomaner are joined by the Leipziger Barockorchester and renowned soloists. In his preface to the liner notes, Thomaskantor Georg Christoph Biller values the Mass as “a highly focussed summary of the Christian beliefs, as well as an architecturally perfect structure. The Mass in B minor is the best example of how timeless and time-related elements come together and complement each other.” The Mass, which is often referred to as Johann Sebastian Bach’s opus summum, is also the work, in which the great Thomaskantor draws a conclusion of his life as a composer.
