These works from Mendelssohn’s early teens, demonstrate his ability to use complex forms and diverse textures with great ease. As well as having an early talent for composition, Mendelssohn was highly proficient string player and played one of the viola parts in the first performance of his Octet. His love of the instrument encouraged him to write a Sonata for Viola and Piano, a rarity included on this CD.

“[The Viola Sonata] is thoughtfully and sensitively played by Hariolf Schlichtig...[The Clarinet Sonata] has a Weberian brilliance that was part of [Mendelssohn's] own musical make-up...It is a lively piece, played with a somewhat hard tone but the right sense of dash by Eduard Brunner and Adrian Oetiker.”
