SCENATET

Love is not always a liberating good – it is just as often the root of human misery and degradation. Niels Rønsholdt’s surreal song cycle Me Quitte (2012) sees an iconic Parisienne love song reflected in a cabinet of magic mirrors where good is turned into evil, love is destructive and beauty is repulsive. In this world premiere recording, we hear the vulnerable voice of the composer himself, together with the Faroese singer Anna Katrin Egilstrød and the Danish ensemble SCENATET.

Per Nørgård: Symphonies Nos. 2 & 6

Per Nørgård: Symphonies Nos. 2 & 6

Nørgård:

Symphony No. 2

Symphony No. 6 'At the End of the Day'

“I feel each of my symphonies is a whole continentin itself,” the Danish composer PerNørgård(b. 1932) has said. His music stems from an insatiable urge to explore thepheno menaof the world and the possibilities of music, and his eight symphonies stand as milestones along the course of six decades. This recording with the Oslo Philharmonicconducted by JohnStorgårdspresents Per Nørgård’sSecondSymphony, in which the composer unfolds his famous ‘infinity principle’ euphorically and almost psychedelically, and his Sixth Symphony, in which the mature composer proves more exploratory andplayfulthan ever.

“exemplary performances from the Oslo Philharmonic in crystalline recordings that fasten on every sonic detail in the scores...what all these symphonies offer is unlike anything any other composer is writing today.” The Guardian, 15th June 2016 ****

“Cumulatively beautiful, structurally tangible and deliciously pure. The Oslo Philharmonic’s ability to collectively recede as if into a minimalist canvas, parts emerging thereafter with brightness and intent without distorting the contours, makes this performance. In music that’s deceptively tricky to pace, Storgårds delivers – again.” Gramophone Magazine, July 2016

“There’s something almost miraculous about the way Finnish conductor John Storgards has brought this music so finely and compellingly into focus…[in the Second] all is ghostly detached sounds, but then a melodically tight little figure in running notes starts to unfold, somehow transforming yet remaining essentially the same…yet the effect isn’t coldly cerebral: it feels natural, instinctual – as do the exultant brass and bells climaxes that grow out of it” BBC Music Magazine, September 2016 *****

Per Nørgård: Symphonies Nos. 4 & 5

Nørgård:

Symphony No. 4

Symphony No. 5

Per Nørgård’smusic originates in an inextinguishable desire to explore the marvels of the world and the powers of music. His eight symphonies stand as milestones, composed through six decades, each with its own unique musical world. This recording by the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestraand conductor John Storgårdspresents two of Nørgård’smost dramatic works; the chaotic and troubled Symphony No. 4inspired by the schizophrenic Swiss artist Adolf Wölfli, and the fearless Symphony No. 5, in which the composer seems to embrace violent forces of nature.

“At times, listening to these quixotically vibrant, multi-layered scores, Jackson Pollock at his craziest has come to mind: you sense the energy in the teeming textures, but trying to find reassuring form can induce vertigo…Storgards has drawn out the Ariadne’s thread I always sensed had to be there and pulled it just tight enough” BBC Music Magazine, September 2016 *****

“The detail in the writing – articulation bestowed upon single instruments in the tiniest of gestures – is beguiling. So are these performances. Listening across the orchestra is vital in this music, just as in Sibelius. The Oslo Philharmonic sound settled at the foundations while suggesting spontaneity on the surface…the brass and percussion offer extreme restraint and delicacy” Gramophone Magazine, July 2016

“John Storgårds makes a strong case for these symphonies; the recording is among Dacapo’s best” MusicWeb International, 29th June 2016

Bine Katrine Bryndorf (organ)

This recording features a collection of magnificent pieces from one of the golden ages of organ music, 'the North German School' of the seventeenth century, which also had ramifications in Scandinavia. Five early pieces by Heinrich Scheidemann and six by his successor Nicolaus Bruhns, recorded by Professor Bine Bryndorf, offer imaginatively virtuosic playing and fervent organ chorales that make use of the whole technical and expressive range of the unique St Raphaëlis Baroque organ in Roskilde Cathedral.

Bine Bryndorf is a Professor of Organ and Sacred Music at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, where she was the youngest Professor ever to be appointed in 2001. She is also a Visiting Professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London, as well as being the organist of the TrinitatisChurch in Copenhagen.

Bine Bryndorf was born and grew up in Elsinore. At the age of 18, she went to Vienna and took her complete training there. Later came the soloist class and further studies in Saarbrucken and Boston. Her most important teachers were Kristian Olesen (organ), Bjørn Hjelmborg (theory), Michael Radulescu and Daniel Roth (organ), William Porter (improvisation) as well as Gordon Murray (harpsichord).

Bine Bryndorf has played concerts in most European countries, in Japan and the USA and is in great demand as a jury member in international organ competitions and as a teacher at masterclasses. Chamber music has always been an important element in her activities.

Nielsen: Concertos

Nielsen:

Flute Concerto, FS119

Robert Langevin (flute)

Clarinet Concerto Op. 57 (FS129)

Anthony McGill (clarinet)

Violin Concerto, Op. 33 (FS61)

Nikolaj Znaider (violin)

“I think in terms of the instruments themselves – I sort of creep into their souls”, said Carl Nielsen (1865-1931). His three solo concertos for violin, flute and clarinet concertos are highly characteristic and expressive works that show how Nielsen developed as a composer, increasingly distancing himself from the classical conventions. This new recording by New York Philharmonic and Alan Gilbert concludes the acclaimed Nielsen Project with soloists Nikolaj Znaider, Robert Langevin and Anthony McGill as the soloists in vivid live recordings from Avery Fisher Hall.

“I have to admit that this sequence of concerti has, quite by accident, saved what I think is the best for last. The combination of Nielsen's characterful writing and Anthony McGill's mellifluous playing gives the Clarinet Concerto a unique charm – the instrument's full range is explored and McGill's tone is marvellously liquid throughout.” David Smith, Presto Classical, 8th June 2015

“In the Violin Concerto Nikolaj Znaider, sweet and slender in tone, is equal to all the work's ferocious technical demands. He treats the first movement's Bach-inspired cadenzas with convincing spontaneity, and dances his way delightfully through the Rondo finale…Robert Langevin is nimble and elegant in the Flute Concerto…Anthony McGill is brilliantly virtuosic in the Clarinet Concerto” BBC Music Magazine, December 2015

Double Triple Koppel

Double Triple Koppel

Concertos by Anders Koppel

Koppel, A:

Concerto for recorder, saxophone and orchestra

Michala Petri (recorder)

Triple Concerto for mezzo saxophone, cello, harp and orchestra

Eugene Hye-Knudsen (cello), Tine Rehling (harp)

Benjamin Koppel (saxophone)

Odense Symfoniorkester, Henrik Vagn Christensen

The Danish composer Anders Koppel's musical collaboration with his son, the highly versatile saxophonist Benjamin Koppel, forms the background for these two concerts with a quite unique soloist configuration, now released for the first time on CD.

In the double concerto the saxophonist meets the classical recorder virtuoso Michala Petri in a fantastic interplay of tradition, improvisation and tonal diversity, while the triple concerto has the warm sound of the rare mezzo saxophone framed by the instruments cello and harp, recorded by the soloists Eugene Hye-Knudsen and Tine Rehling.

“Koppel's music is unabashedly sumptuous and tonal, with both scores full of whip-smart musical adventure and demonstrating Koppel's knack for a luscious melody.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2015

Nielsen: Maskarade

Nielsen: Maskarade

Johan Reuter, Stephen Milling, Niels-Jørgen Riis, Dénise Beck, Anne Margrethe Dahl, Ditte Højgaard Andersen, Guido Paevatalu

Danish National Symphony Orchestra and Choir, Michael Schønwandt

Carl Nielsen's vivid comedy opera Maskarade has enjoyed a natural status as Denmark's national opera ever since its first performance at the Royal Danish Opera in 1906.

On this recording, Nielsen expert Michael Schønwandt leads a sparkling cast of today’s finest Nielsen singers and the Danish National Symphony Orchestra through the delightful yet stirring comedy plot.

Recorded in the ideal acoustic of DR Koncerthuset, this is the 21st century’s first studio recording of Nielsen’s much-loved opera, appropriately released to celebrate the Danish composer’s 150th anniversary.

“here’s a cast (led by Johan Reuter and Niels Jorgen Riis) whose singing brings the comedy to life under the expert baton of Michael Schonwandt. Enjoy two hours of top-notch light music and brush up your Danish in the process.” The Times, 17th July 2015 ****

“Nielsen’s anniversary invites us to reassess the composer with new recordings, in this case a fourth – and successful – outing on disc for Maskarade...The new performance, like all previous rivals, builds on the strength of home casting at the work's alma mater, the Royal Danish Opera...there's a suitably towering comic monster performance from Stephen Milling.” Gramophone Magazine, August 2015

“The mighty bass Stephen Milling catches the ageing paterfamilias Jeronimus's comically fallible humanity likeable…Denise Beck and Ditte Højgaard Andersen as love interests Leonora and her maid Pernille are excellent, as are the many character roles. Michael Schønwandt conducts with great detail and sweep.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2015

“When played and sung like this, by a cast, conductor and orchestra who clearly relish every bar, it is hard not to be swept along by the warmth and generosity of spirit of the music...All squeeze the maximum dramatic juice out of what the score gives them; they may be stock comic characters, but the feelings with which Nielsen invests them are real enough.” The Guardian, 16th September 2015 ***

Kuhlau:

Piano Quartet No. 1 in C minor, Op. 32

Piano Quartet No. 2 in A major, Op. 50

Copenhagen Piano Quartet

Friedrich Kuhlau was the most cosmopolitan personality in Danish music at the beginning of the 19th century. A creative, forward-looking and extremely productive composer, he rarely let his pen lie idle. The two piano quartets recorded on this CD by the young Copenhagen Piano Quartet are major works from the composer’s most artistically fertile decade, besides testifying to Kuhlau’s own brilliance as a pianist.

“let's have the Third Quartet and some more Kuhlau from these fine young Danish musicians.” Gramophone Magazine, July 2015

Nu er dagen fuld af sang

Frydeligt med jubelkor

På det jævne from FS 95

Derfor kan vort øje glædes

Hvem sidder der bag skærmen

Betragt mit svage spind

Den danske sang from FS 114

Ars Nova Copenhagen, Michael Bojesen

“It is strange that when I write these simple melodies, it is as if I am not the composer – it is people from my childhood or the Danish people who want something through me.” Thus said Carl Nielsen (1865-1931), who was devoted to renewing the Danish song tradition and whose melodies are still at the heart of Danish community song today. On this recording, Ars Nova Copenhagen presents a selection of Nielsen’s most popular songs under conductor Michael Bojesen.

“These simple tunes can unlock many a greater truth in Nielsen's concert works. In that sense they wholly deserve the artistry of Ars Nova Copenhagen...open-throated singing that befits the direct intent of the tunes and their typically angular harmonies...the beautiful tapering of phrase-endings nicely serves the harmonic spice with which Nielsen often twists his stanzas to a close.” Gramophone Magazine, June 2015

Nielsen: Symphonies Nos. 5 and 6

Nielsen:

Symphony No. 5, Op. 50 (FS97)

Symphony No. 6, (FS116) 'Sinfonia semplice'

This recording concludes the acclaimed cycle of Carl Nielsen symphonies by the New York Philharmonic and Alan Gilbert known as The Nielsen Project. Recorded live in Avery Fisher Hall in October 2014, this CD presents the Danish national composer’s last two symphonies nos. 5 and 6, the latter of which has never previously been performed by the Philharmonic. According to Alan Gilbert, both works represent the “battle between good and evil” and are profound, dramatic works by a mature composer who knew that his days were numbered. Marking the beginning of the Carl Nielsen 150th Anniversary in 2015, this release coincides with the New York recording sessions (Jan 8-13) for the composer’s clarinet concerto, to be released in April together with the flute and violin concertos.

“Gilbert leads his New York players in a faithful, virtuosic rendering of all Nielsen's volatile sings between dead-pan facetious and deadly serious.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2015

“you will be missing a glimpse of heaven by failing to purchase…landmark performances...awe-inspiring.” MusicWeb International, April 2015
