Liszt: Sonata In B Minor & Schumann: Kinderszenen

Liszt: Sonata In B Minor & Schumann: Kinderszenen

Liszt:

Piano Sonata in B minor, S178

Schumann:

Kinderszenen, Op. 15

Joseph-Maurice Weder (piano)

A debut could not contain two greater contrasts: Liszt’s inscrutable Sonata in B minor and Schumann’s enchanting Kinderszenen in performances by the young Swiss pianist Joseph-Maurice Weder. A bold program – since recordings of these two works are not in short supply. Weder nonetheless repeatedly discovers new things in these frequently performed works – with important support from the legendary “Manfred Bürki” Steinway concert grand piano of 1901, an instrument with a brilliant treble shining its supernatural light over the profound bass.

Gertrud Schilde (violin)

Norddeutscher Kammerchor, Maria Jürgensen

Violinist Gertrud Schilde has probed the enigmatic and monumental Ciaccona from JS Bach's Partita in D minor and uncovered spectacular evidence in the form of a whole series of traditional chorale melodies hidden away in its intricate compositional design. On this eye-opener of an album the enterprising violinist teams up with the Northern German Chamber Choir to present her revealing discoveries.

Martin Luther's consoling Easter hymn 'Christ lag in Todesbanden' runs like a red thread through the work. The chorales, from 'Jesu, deine Passion' through 'Den Tod niemand zwingen kunnt' to 'Jesu, meine Freude,' deal with the double theme of death and resurrection. This is surely no coincidence. Bach penned this work not too long after the death of his first wife. It was not until he returned from an official trip to Karlsbad that he learned of this tragic event - when his beloved wife already lay in her grave.

It is thus not surprising that traces of Maria Barbara are encountered in the Ciaccona. However, Bach would not have been Bach if he had not avoided obvious allusions, preferring instead to use a subtly encoded numerical mysticism. Again and again his wife's name can be deciphered; the year of her death can be found as well as the names of their children. In this way the Ciaccona occupying a central and special place in the cycle of three sonatas and three partitas for violin solo becomes a magnificent memorial tribute to his late wife.

Gertrud Schilde adds yet another aspect to this surprising discovery: together with Jan Philip Schulze she also presents the Mendelssohn version of the Ciaccona with piano accompaniment, which sheds bright new light on the rhythmic and harmonic course taken by this splendid masterpiece. The chorales produce a fresh and vibrant impression with the knowledgeable conductor Maria Jürgensen.

Johann Blanchard (piano)

Carmen made Georges Bizet world famous, but he lived only a few months to enjoy the overwhelming success of this opera depicting love and jealousy among hot-blooded Spaniards. A swim in the cold Seine did him in!

Today hardly anybody remembers that Bizet also composed piano music. To our good fortune, Johann Blanchard's inventory of his rarities cabinet has yielded more new discoveries that will make the hearts of music lovers beat faster - while the latest SACD technology will have the same effect on those of audiophiles.

Bizet's piano works place considerable technical demands on the pianist but Johann Blanchard naturally rises to the challenge on this discovery disc which complement his debut featuring works by Cécile Chaminade.

Rudolf Innig (Schuke-Organ, Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche, Detmold)

Samuel Barber began his compositional career as a genuine child prodigy. At the age of nine he knew that he wanted to be a musician, and a year later he wrote his first opera – or at least the first act, after which the cook, his librettist, ran out of ideas! He initially worked as an organist, and even though he later focused on other areas, organ compositions are found throughout his oeuvre. Rudolf Innig’s complete recording of these works offers enthralling insights into the development of Barber’s full and rich life as a composer.

Franz Schmidt was “the most musical man in Vienna” – this is what Gustav Mahler had to say about his fellow composer, who, unlike him, is almost completely forgotten today. Stefan Blunier has rediscovered this late-romantic master and now with the mighty forces of the Beethoven Orchestra of Bonn presents Schmidt’s Symphony No. 2 together with Richard Strauss’s Festival Prelude composed during the same year for the opening of Vienna’s Konzerthaus.

Herzogenberg, H:

Piano Trio No. 1 Op. 24

Piano Trio No. 2 Op. 36

Heinrich von Herzogenberg’s search for selfhood finally came to fruition in his two piano trios. After highly promising successes in his native Graz with large-format works modeled on Wagner, the talented young composer experienced a creative and existential crisis from which he first recovered when he turned to Johannes Brahms. The Vienna Piano Trio documents this artistic awakening with a top quality interpretation on SACD adding a new facet to the reception of Herzogenberg’s music after its sleeping beauty’s century of slumbering.

Stephen Marchionda (guitar)

During his lifetime Enrique Granados was highly valued above all for the poetry of his piano playing – and his compositions also breathe the same poetic spirit. Stephen Marchionda honors the composer on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of his birth with a highly personal selection from these works. His own arrangements for the guitar create an illuminating link to Granados’ roots in Spanish folklore.

Piano Duo Trenkner/Speidel

Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 is one of classical music’s all-time greatest hits. It was composed and premiered in New York in 1893, which is why – but not only why – it is known as the “New World Symphony.” On this recording, which also includes the first cycle of the equally popular Slavonic Dances, the Piano Duo Trenkner / Speidel once again demonstrates the great advantages and fascinating rhythmic verve offered by reductions for piano four hands. Trimmed of the comfortable and sumptuous sound of the large orchestra, Dvořák’s genial treatment of motives of Bohemian folk character shines in even greater glory.

Berlage Saxophone Quartet

After the phenomenal success of their Saxofolk debut album, the members of the Berlage Saxophone Quartet now explore entirely different terrain. Five famous composers who found themselves at odds with the political circumstances of their times produced key works of great intensity viewed here from a completely new perspective in these virtuosic arrangements for four saxophones.

In Search of Freedom advocates the freedom of art, which manages to survive even in situations of limited personal liberty. For various reasons Hanns Eisler, Kurt Weill, and Erwin Schulhoff fell into disfavour under the National Socialist regime.

Arvo Pärt earned his place of dishonour on the index of the Soviet authorities when he turned to music of religious and meditative character. Fratres is one of his first pieces of this kind. Vineta Sareike, the first violinist of the Artemis Quartet, plays the violin part, which creates the impression of simplicity but in fact is very demanding. When performed by a saxophone ensemble the harmonic dimension produces an absolutely hypnotic effect –magnificent!

Maria Luisa Cantos (piano)

A little over a hundred years have passed since Enrique Granados met his death in the English Channel. After an acclaimed concert tour that took him to New York at the height of World War I, a German submarine sank the ship on which he was returning to Europe.

Many manuscripts by the famous pianist were also lost in the icy waters and must have included priceless treasures – as we may gather from the interpretations of his surviving works by Maria Luisa Cantos, the grande dame of Spanish piano music, on her latest recording. After Granados had initially been brought to safety, he plunged into the water to save his beloved wife and lost his life in the effort – lending a romantic element to this extremely tragic episode.

With genuine mastery Maria Luisa Cantos probes the deep feeling of this music with which she has spent most of her life. Without false sentimentality she honors the composer on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of his birth on this sumptuously recorded, multichannel SACD in 2+2+2 sound.
