Kirill Troussov (violin), Alexandra Troussova (piano)

The brother and sister Kirill Troussov and Alexandra Troussova have performed music together ever since their childhood days – the best preparation for César Franck’s magnificent Violin Sonata, the focal work on their new Emotions album. Their close cooperation allows them a natural freedom which adds an absolutely new dimension to this masterpiece of romantic chamber music. They form a dream team, and so do their instruments: the famous “Brodsky” Stradivarius on which Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto was premiered and the legendary Steinway “Manfred Bürki” concert grand piano from 1901

Gao Ping:

Night Alley

Yubo Zhou (piano)

On this challenging debut disc the young Chinese pianist Yubo Zhou introduces herself to the listening public with Frédéric Chopin’s 24 Préludes. It goes without saying that this prizewinner at many international competitions has the technical mastery required to perform these extremely difficult miniatures. But there is more: her fine feel for romantic poetry and the often intimate charm of these mostly very short works will make even experienced Chopin enthusiasts sit up and take special notice. Chopin’s third piano sonata – and– honoring her native China – “Night Alley” by Ping Gao perfectly round off this uncommonly attractive programme. Yubo Zhou chose Gao’s “Night Alley” with very careful thought. The work produces an absolutely magical atmosphere full of dynamic contrasts and abrupt shifts of color; the grand piano resonates and vibrates with percussive individual tones and chords. This all-around fascinating debut album by China’s youngest piano professor of course is presented in MDG’s hallmark three-dimensional sound on SACD.

Beethoven Orchester Bonn, Stefan Blunier

Beethoven’s Second Symphony is not exactly one of the symphonic repertoire’s greatest hits. However, as the latest release from the compositional Titan’s hometown demonstrates, it certainly has the stuff of greatness. It was here that Beethoven first prescribed a “Scherzo” in the movement slot traditionally occupied by the minuet, which automatically lends this work historical significance. The orchestra’s principal conductor Stefan Blunier inserts the symphony in a new context formed by carefully selected orchestral overtures in a program holding in store many a musical surprise. This recording also features a unique coupling of overtures: Name Day, The Ruins of Athens, The Creatures of Prometheus, Coriolan and Egmont. While most of the overtures penned by Beethoven can be assigned to a stage work, the Name Day Overture is a genuine all-rounder. It first inherited this title after the composer’s death on the Emperor’s name day; it is quite apparent that he was inspired by the hymnic quality of this special feast day. The orchestra, under their conductor Stefan Blunier, positively crackle and the flames glow on this three-dimensional recording by the Beethoven Orchestra of Bonn in the very best SACD quality – all in a performance that would have brought joy to Beethoven himself. Bach, J S: Toccatas, BWV910-916

Bach, J S: Toccatas, BWV910-916

arr. By Max Reger

Christoph Schoener (organ)

First Bach, then Reger, and now Bach/Reger: the present disc is Christoph Schoener’s third MDG recording on the four organs in St. Michael’s Church in Hamburg. The attractive program featuring Johann Sebastian Bach’s seven toccatas, five of them in gripping arrangements by Max Reger, embodies the best and fullest opulence of sound.

The MDG sound engineers rely on the very finest three-dimensional SACD technology, the big sound of this musical event, including the echo division and its extra spatial effects, can be enjoyed at home – an audiophile highlight of a special kind!

The seven toccatas were originally intended for the harpsichord. Max Reger transferred five of them to the organ, and now Christoph Schoener has adapted the other two. On the Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach organ in unequal temperament he demonstrates that the historical performance style too can be pleasurably realized in St. Michael’s Church in Hamburg.

Armoniosa

Following on from their debut recording of Vivaldi’s La Stravaganza, Italian ensemble, Armoniosa present here a new recording of Giovanni Benedetto Platti's Trio Sonatas.

However, although the title may read 'Trio Sonata', a spectacular surprise soon unfolds: contrary to all convention, Platti scored the part of the second solo instrument in his sonatas for the cello instead of a second violin – thereby providing for an extraordinary and fresh listening experience.

The high-resolution recording on this SACD enables the listener to grasp all the tonal details; the music seems to be within hand’s reach, especially in the recommended three-dimensional reproduction of the 2+2+2 recording.

The man who commissioned these works, Count Schönborn-Wiesentheid, the brother of two Würzburg archbishops, was a cellist in his own right and surely would have enjoyed this disc.

Hardy Rittner (piano)

The conclusion and crowning culmination of an epochal project: Vol. 5 rounds off Hardy Rittner’s acclaimed Brahms complete recording on historical pianos.

The careful selection of lavishly and lovingly restored concert grand pianos perfectly suited to this task enhances the value of this pioneering edition even more. The present release comes with a double high point: Rittner performs the variation cycles, works of the highest virtuosity producing an extraordinary audience impact, on a Steinway & Sons concert grand piano, serial number 553, manufactured around 1860.

Hardy Rittner magnificently brings out the special qualities of historical pianos; silvery double octaves in the eleventh variation of the first volume of op. 35, crystal-clear brilliance in numerous thirty-second runs, frequent fierce growling of the basses – the Steinway grand piano, even in its early years with its famous patented iron-cast plate and diagonal stringing, generates an enormous sound palette and shows itself from its very best side in Rittner’s sensitive and powerful hands.

Mozart Arias

Mozart Arias

Mozart:

Quando avran fine omai ... Padre, germani, addio! (from Idomeneo)

Se il padre perdei (from Idomeneo)

Solitudini amiche ... Zeffiretti lusinghieri (from Idomeneo)

Chi mai del mio provo - Idol mio se ritroso (from Idomeneo)

Ach, ich fühl's (from Die Zauberflöte, K620)

Or sai chi l'onore (from Don Giovanni)

Crudele? Ah no, mio bene! ... Non mi dir, bell'idol mio (from Don Giovanni)

Porgi amor (from Le nozze di Figaro)

E Susanna non vien! … Dove sono i bei momenti (from Le nozze di Figaro)

Temerari!...Come scoglio! (from Così fan tutte)

Ei parte...Per pietà (from Così fan tutte)

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed about twenty five operas – and with them often asked too much of his contemporaries. While his audiences expected to find familiar patterns and types and were looking for good entertainment, his subtly elaborated individual roles require complete listening attention.

In her aria recitals Maria Bengtsson brings out the multifaceted nature of his characters – a dimension also illustrated by the most highly demanding orchestral part.

The Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne led by the conductor Bertrand de Billy once again proves to be a magnificent performance partner.

As well as Idomeneo and the Magic Flute, the Swedish soprano has selected marvelous scenes from Don Giovanni, The Marriage of Figaro, and Così fan tutte. It is especially in the two Fiordiligi numbers that she displays all the many sides of her lyric voice.

Beethoven: Symphony No. 3 'Eroica'

Beethoven: Symphony No. 3 'Eroica'

Beethoven:

Symphony No. 3 in E flat major, Op. 55 'Eroica'

Consecration of the House Overture, Op. 124

König Stephan Overture, Op. 117

Beethoven Orchestra Bonn, Stefan Blunier

As legend tells it, when Beethoven learned that Napoleon had declared himself emperor, he tore the title page of his latest symphony to shreds. The hotheaded composer had originally intended to call it “Bonaparte,” but now he felt that the honoree had absolutely betrayed the ideals of the French Revolution.

We can be grateful that he left the music unchanged, thereby bequeathing an enduring masterpiece to posterity – as this compelling new recording of the Eroica shows.

Stefan Blunier complements the popular Eroica with König Stephan and Die Weihe des Hauses, two very rarely heard overtures. It is difficult to understand why these two masterpieces are hardly ever performed in the concert hall – especially since they roused the premiere audiences to storms of endless applause when they were presented in conjunction with stage performances.

This is the fourth recording in the series from Stefan Blunier and the Beethoven Orchester Bonn, all of which have been critically acclaimed.

Mahler: Rückert-Lieder & Lieder Eines Fahrenden Gesellen

Mahler: Rückert-Lieder & Lieder Eines Fahrenden Gesellen

Mahler:

Rückert-Lieder (5 songs, complete)

Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (4 songs, complete)

Kindertotenlieder

Gerhild Romberger (contralto) & Alfredo Perl (piano)

Unquenchable yearning, heartrending grief, ardent desire – in Gustav Mahler’s songs the romantic emotional world doubtless rises to magnificent heights.

This new recording of the piano versions with Gerhild Romberger and Alfredo Perl demonstrate that the piano versions uncover respectful relations to models such as Schubert’s Winterreise; just listen to the tormented tone of the four Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen!

Five songs grouped together today as the Rückert-Lieder round off the program. They include a very personal “Liebst du um Schönheit” dedicated by the composer to his wife Alma following their marriage.

Significantly, Mahler did not orchestrate this song. Romberg and Perl’s interpretation of these very personal songs conveys special intimacy and authenticity thanks to the finely tuned Steinway Grand Piano “Manfred Bürki” (1901) - a precisely balanced SACD recording.
