Berlage Saxophone Quartet

After the phenomenal success of their Saxofolk debut album, the members of the Berlage Saxophone Quartet now explore entirely different terrain. Five famous composers who found themselves at odds with the political circumstances of their times produced key works of great intensity viewed here from a completely new perspective in these virtuosic arrangements for four saxophones.

In Search of Freedom advocates the freedom of art, which manages to survive even in situations of limited personal liberty. For various reasons Hanns Eisler, Kurt Weill, and Erwin Schulhoff fell into disfavour under the National Socialist regime.

Arvo Pärt earned his place of dishonour on the index of the Soviet authorities when he turned to music of religious and meditative character. Fratres is one of his first pieces of this kind. Vineta Sareike, the first violinist of the Artemis Quartet, plays the violin part, which creates the impression of simplicity but in fact is very demanding. When performed by a saxophone ensemble the harmonic dimension produces an absolutely hypnotic effect –magnificent!

Maria Luisa Cantos (piano)

A little over a hundred years have passed since Enrique Granados met his death in the English Channel. After an acclaimed concert tour that took him to New York at the height of World War I, a German submarine sank the ship on which he was returning to Europe.

Many manuscripts by the famous pianist were also lost in the icy waters and must have included priceless treasures – as we may gather from the interpretations of his surviving works by Maria Luisa Cantos, the grande dame of Spanish piano music, on her latest recording. After Granados had initially been brought to safety, he plunged into the water to save his beloved wife and lost his life in the effort – lending a romantic element to this extremely tragic episode.

With genuine mastery Maria Luisa Cantos probes the deep feeling of this music with which she has spent most of her life. Without false sentimentality she honors the composer on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of his birth on this sumptuously recorded, multichannel SACD in 2+2+2 sound.

Rita Karin Meier (clarinet)

Belenus Quartet

Heinrich Baermann is quite well known today as Carl Maria von Weber’s source of inspiration. The famous virtuoso, for whom Weber personally created his clarinet concertos, repeatedly took up the pen on his own – and did so with great success.

Several dozen works by Baermann have been transmitted to MDG and on this recording Rita Karin Meier and the Belenus Quartet turn to his three quintets for clarinet and strings and with them bring back to life his much acclaimed cantabile playing as well as his legendary virtuosic capabilities.

Grieg:

String Quartet in G minor, Op. 27

String Quartet No.2 in F major

Fugue in F minor

Meccore String Quartet

Another exhilarating debut on MDG from the Meccore String Quartet. The four instrumentalists have selected string quartets by Edvard Grieg forming the ideal medium for their vibrant style.

The distraught but magnificent Quartet in G minor op. 27 marks the epochal shift from romanticism to impressionism. Although Grieg’s second quartet remained unfinished, this circumstance does not impair the quality of the extant fragment. Moreover, on this SACD the Meccores compensate for the missing movements with a fugue from the Norwegian master’s formative years.

Young, passionate, wild – the dynamic Meccore String Quartet based in Warsaw takes the

performance stage by storm. Their practice of standing for performances rather than sitting can be fully appreciated here in the three dimensions of this high-resolution SACD from MDG.

Frank Bungarten (contra guitar)

For his new recording featuring compositions by the guitarist Johann Kaspar Mertz, distribguished performer Frank Bungarten has selected a very special instrument: a contraguitar designed on the basis of an exemplary historical model by Johann Gottfried Scherzer with a series of additional bass strings on a second neck.

As a result, we now can experience the opulent sonority of Mertz’s works just as they were originally heard – now for the first time since the death of the “last Viennese virtuoso” in 1856.

For the posthumously published Fantasies op. 65 and the Harmonie du soir Mertz very evidently reckoned with additional volume in the bass. It is only on the ten-string contraguitar that these works can be played exactly as they are notated.

Mertz composed a total of thirty-four opera paraphrases for his instrument. His orchestral source material calls for the full sound of the contraguitar, and in Frank Bungarten Verdi’s Ernani too finds an interpreter who makes the difficult technique of the arrangement seem easy.

Mélancolie

Spyros Piano Trio

For more than fifty years Eduard Nápravník conducted at the Imperial Opera in the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg. The legendary renown of this theatre very much goes back to the “Nápravník Era.” The Spyros Piano Trio demonstrates on the recording premiere of Nápravník’s two piano trios that the gifted orchestral conductor was also an outstanding composer – all of this on this SACD now being released on MDG.

Born in 1839, he conducted the premieres of operas such as Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades and Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov. Nevertheless, in his own works one is occasionally reminded of Verdi.

The members of the Spyros Trio, Tatiana Korsunskaya, Bartek Niziol, and Denis Severin, came together by chance to perform chamber music by Louise Adolpha Le Beau. The resultant MDG recording immediately received rave reviews and in 2015 was awarded the coveted ECHO Klassik prize.

Musica Baltica Vol. 2: Friedrich Wilhelm Markull - Organ Works 1

Musica Baltica Vol. 2: Friedrich Wilhelm Markull - Organ Works 1

Andrzej Szadejko (organ)

When Friedrich Wilhelm Markull died at the age of seventy-one in 1887, posthumous tributes honored him as a “most highly knowledgeable musician and a most highly outstanding organist and composer for the church, school, and salon and of classical orchestral works.” For more than fifty years Markull had played a significant role in Danzig’s music culture. It was in a very dismal state when he began his activity there, but he built it up ex nihilo and brought it to a great flourishing. Andrzej Szadejko has chosen a first attractive selection from Markull’s countless organ compositions and recorded these works on the historic Bucholz organ at the Church of St. Nicholas in Stralsund – a welcome continuation of our very promisingly inaugurated Musica Baltica series.

Beethoven: Symphonies Nos. 4 & 7

Beethoven:

Symphony No. 4 in B flat major, Op. 60

Symphony No. 7 in A major, Op. 92

Beethoven Orchester Bonn, Stefan Blunier

The Beethoven Orchestra of Bonn concludes its complete recording of the symphonies of the composer whose name it bears with an absolutely rousing performance.

The spirited Seventh Symphony brings together everything that General Music Director Stefan Blunier has demanded of his musicians from the very beginning of this cycle: emotional depth, gripping rhythms, frenetic energy, and powerful tension holding the audience in suspense even after the last chord has faded away.

Why does the BOB recording of Beethoven’s symphonies now complete have such a marvellous impact? Two reasons: because of the first-class interpretation and because it is the first cycle to be recorded in its entirety in three-dimensional 2+2+2 sound on Super Audio CD, setting a discographic milestone guaranteed to please audiophile music fans – and not only them.

Stefan Blunier’s recording of seven rarely heard overtures along with this cycle rounds off this top-quality musical treat with a master’s touch.

Stuttgarter Hymnus-Chorknaben & Handel's Company, Rainer Johannes Homburg

Johann Sebastian Bach revised his St. John Passion several times. Which one to choose? Rainer Johannes Homburg selected the last version for this performance with his Hymnus Choirboys of Stuttgart and Handel’s Company.

Why? It combines the carefree expressivity of Bach’s initial years at St.Thomas, eliminating unnecessary second thoughts from his middle years, with an experienced and mature master’s instrumental tonal sophistication – which Homburg fully exploits.

The richly coloured continuo group, here even including a contrabassoon, makes us sit up and listen. Get ready for an enthralling listening experience and vibrant performance by this prizewinning traditional choir!

Goldberg Vocal & Goldberg Baroque Ensembles

When Danzig, today’s Gdansk in Poland, was an independent and prosperous centre of trade and commerce, it also enjoyed the status of a magnificent and multifaceted music centre.

However, many of the sources documenting its rich cultural heritage are no longer extant, most of them destroyed by war. Andrzej Szadejko has researched the historic holdings of the Library of the Danzig Academy of the Sciences and made surprising discoveries.

On this WORLD PREMIERE recording he leads the Goldberg Baroque Ensemble in performances of seven Baroque cantatas in every way equaling the originality and mastery of works by much more famous composers of those times.

The Goldberg Baroque Ensemble takes its name from Johann Gottlieb Goldberg, certainly Danzig’s most famous musical son and the Bach pupil whose name was immortalized by is teacher’s famous variations.

At the annual Goldberg Festival the ensemble performs in Gdansk’s Trinity Church, a structure with opulent acoustics optimally rendered on this multidimensional high-resolution SACD recording.
