Ruzicka: Crossing The Border

Ruzicka:

Der die Gesänge Zerschlug - Stele für Paul Celan nach Gedichten aus "Zeitgehöft"

Dietrich Henschel (baritone)

Über die Grenze

Peter Sigl (cello)

String Quartet No. 5 'Sturz'

œnm . österreichisches ensemble für neue musik, Johannes Kalitzke

Peter Ruzicka composed the works on this CD during three different creative periods.

The cantata “…DER DIE GESÄNGE ZERSCHLUG” (Who Shattered the Songs) was created halfway along the path towards his first opera CELAN.

Alongside the violin concerto …INSELN, RANDLOS… (Islands, Edgeless) and the orchestral piece …VORGEFÜHLE… (Presentiments), it marks a significant predilection, in terms of both musical language and structure, for staged music.

Sturz (Plunge) was written between the Celan opera and its successor, the music theatre Hölderlin, and went into the music of the second stage work via several metamorphoses. The cello concerto …Über Die Grenze (Crossing the Border), closely related to the ensemble piece Trans, explored the expressive und structural terrain for a new opera before either its essential content or working title were known. Meanwhile Benjamin has been completed and awaits its world premiere planned for 2018.

The oenm . österreichisches ensemble für neue musik has dedicated itself to the performance of contemporary music for over 40 years and has established itself internationally as one of the leading ensembles of its kind. With over 300 world premieres since its founding and regular participation at numerous major festivals, the ensemble residing in Salzburg has meanwhile become indispensible on the world’s great concert stages.

Horst Lohse: Letzte Dinge - Hieronymus Bosch Triptychon

Lohse, H:

Die sieben Todsünden

Die vier letzten Dinge

Cave cave Dominus videt

Bamberger Symphoniker, Christoph Maria Moosmann

This year the world is celebrating the 500th year of death of the outstanding Dutch Renaissance painter Hieronymus Bosch (†1516).

“Hieronymus Bosch’s pictorial worlds exercised an immense fascination on me already during my youth, and this has not at all waned over the years”, Horst Lohse notated whilst working on his Hieronymus Bosch Triptych.

In the parts of this work, composed consecutively over the course of 23 years, he dedicates himself to three elements of the “Madrid Panel” ascribed to Bosch, which came to Spain via Philip II and is today preserved in the Museo del Prado. First of all, the central round picture (“The Seven Deadly Sins”, 1989), then the four small round pictures in the corners of the panel (“The Four Last Things”, 1996 97) and, finally, the tension between the black base and the centre of the middle round picture (“Cave cave Dominus videt”, 2011 /12).

Le Désenchantement Du Monde. Concerto Symphonique Pour Piano Et Orchestre

When the first concert of the series founded by the composer Karl Amadeus Hartmann (later designated as musica viva) took place at Munich's Prince Regent's Theatre on 7 October 1945, it marked the birth of an important new cultural event in post-war Germany.

Up to the present day, this oldest concert series for New Music still brings together the world's most important artists - conductors and interpreters alike - in the field of new and the newest music, also continuing to set new standards for the interpretation of new classical music with the outstanding Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra.

The SACD presented here is a good example of this: Ligeti's Lontano - a classic! Murail's Piano Concerto completed in 2012 - interpreted by Pierre-Laurent Aimard - and Benjamin's Palimpsests of 2002. All three works conducted by George Benjamin himself - one can't do any better than that!

“This is special. Three utterly captivating, ear-tickling pieces by composers from successive generations in superlative performances…the centrepiece of the disc is the world premiere performance of Tristan Murail’s impressive piano concerto Le désenchantement du monde with the ever-sensational Pierre-Laurent Aimard as soloist…an enthralling masterpiece” BBC Music Magazine, Christmas 2016 *****

“Benjamin leads a superlative performance [of Lontano], one surprisingly visceral for a piece about distance…the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra supply more immediacy, with a richness that they might also deploy in, say, Strauss…Benjamin’s own Palimpsests come off well, too, and again the Bavarians’ playing is special…Aimard is as strong an advocate as always [in Le désenchantement du monde], and Murail devotees should not hesitate” Gramophone Magazine

“Surging and glinting, mystical and meditative, this work [Le Désenchantement du monde] is altogether intriguing.” Sunday Times, 25th September 2016

“Benjamin’s performance of Ligeti’s Lontano, a 20th-century classic, is exceptional for its transparency and its wonderfully controlled sense of mystery...Like all the best music, [Benjamin's] Palimpsests makes up its own structural rules as it goes along, defining its aims and achieving them with total success.” The Guardian, 8th September 2016 ****

Lachenmann: Speaker - ...Zwei Gefühle ..., Musik Mit Leonardo

Lachenmann:

...zwei Gefühle..., Musik für Leonardo, for two speakers & ensemble

Helmut Lachenmann (speaker)

Peter Eötvös

Susanna Mälkki

The second of two SACD releases from the Neos label celebrating Helmut Lachenmann's 80th birthday in November 2015.

When his compositions were first made available, musicians were very cautious and suspicious about the impact his music would have, as they had to change the way they performed.Neos has been at the forefront of recording unusual repertoire and is very proud to release this recording to acknowledge the place Lachenmann now has in the classical music world.

Performed the famous Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra (ranking as number 6 in the world according to Gramophone), and with outstanding soloists (Helmut Lachenmann himself) and conductors (Peter Eötvös and Susanna Mälkki), this is our tribute.

Lachenmann:

Ausklang

This CD is released in celebration of Helmut Lachenmann’s 80th birthday (27th November 2015). There are two separate Hybrid-SACDs on offer with the famous Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra (ranking as number 6 in the world according to Gramophone), and with outstanding soloists (Pierre-Laurent Aimard) and conductors (Jonathan Nott).

Times have changed when almost all soloists and even whole orchestras refused to play his works, as they felt anxious about damaging their instruments.

In reality they were not used to Lachenmann’s new musical language which asked for unusual playing technique and a different kind of ensemble playing. At that time Neos' former label

'col legno' was a pioneer recording Lachenmann, and a lot of people told them they were crazy! It was clear to them however that they had to release some of his orchestral main works in view of this special occasion.

Thomas Kessler: Said The Shotgun To The Head & Utopia II

Thomas Kessler: Said The Shotgun To The Head & Utopia II

Kessler, T:

, said the shotgun to the head.

Utopia II For 5 Voices, 41 Instruments And Live Electronics

WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln, Jonathan Stockhammer

At an age when one otherwise normally plays with model railways with one’s grandchildren, Thomas Kessler is experiencing his second spring. At the tender age of 66 he refers, in , ‘Said The Shot-Gun To The Head’, to the juvenile culture of Rap, but of course without making use of the customary Gangsta Rapper clichés.

His music follows the word cascades of the Slam-Poet Saul Williams in great detail. It is strengthened by a Rap choir that is to be cast for each individual performance, made up of schoolchildren in Cologne: seven voices sitting in the orchestra and – in the closest contact with the classical musicians – propelling the event.

Kessler goes still further eight years later in Utopia II. His idea of live electronics is central here, reflecting decades of studio experience. Each musician has a microphone, loudspeaker and laptop at his disposal alongside his instrument, and can individually control and alter the sound. The whole, therefore, is not regulated by a “god at the control desk” but by musicians who listen attentively to each other.

The result is a multi-layered, hardly foreseeable orchestral sound containing, alongside instrumental tones, countless sounds, remote voices and noises, as well as fragments of news channels.

ENSEMBLE EXPERIMENTAL des SWR

The four works brought together on this CD, the result of the first 25 years activity of the Heinrich Strobel Foundation and the EXPERIMENTALSTUDIO in Freiburg im Breisgau, founded in 1971, document different aspects of work with live-electronics.

The spectrum in which the technical development is reflected in this field extends from the playing of a pre-produced recording and initial attempts with delays to complex forms of the transformation of sound and its projection in space, and of space simulation.

original version

The Sound of Silence:

mediated between these cultures as an essayist.

Hosokawa rarely turns to analogies from early Japanese lyric poetry to explain his music. Far more often he refers to the tradition of calligraphy. He ‘paints’ his compositions on the background of stillness, a canvas of silence.

The QUATUOR DIOTIMA was founded by graduates of the Paris and Lyon Conservatories. They were awarded First Prize at the FNAPEC Competition, Paris (1999) and the Contemporary Music Prize at the London String Quartet Competition (2000).

“Hosokawa likens his music to Japanese calligraphy, and this exquisite anthology of works for string quartet the Quatuor Diotima draw all the lines with exemplary grace and reticence.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2013 *****

“Excellent, strongly committed and meticulously prepared performances from the Quatuor Diotima that do full justice to these often complex but also beautiful works.” MusicWeb International, 8th July 2013
