Joseph Kelemen (organ)

Both organs recorded on this CD resound optimally within their respective church interiors thanks to the outstanding acoustics there. The very different sizes of these interiors are ultimately responsible for the diverging interpretations on the two instruments. The recurring long note values of the Gregorian chant in the Mass awaken the feeling of timelessness – here, the tremendous monumentality of the performances can make a maximum effect within the large space of the Klosterneuburg Monastery Church. The smaller Gabelbach organ evokes a nimble, chamber-music orientated manner of playing which conveys to the listener a certain closeness to the events within the much smaller space. Hassler’s keyboard music assumes that the player will use a single manual, and this consideration was observed on the present recording; solo registrations were as yet unknown in Hassler’s time. Of course, “sparing” registrations were occasionally used on the large organ of Klosterneuburg.

Bruckner: Symphony No. 5 in B flat major

Bruckner: Symphony No. 5 in B flat major

It is a bold undertaking indeed nowadays to launch a Bruckner cycle in SACD quality. Dieter Oehms, together with Simone Young and the Hamburg Philharmonic, have succeeding it bringing it off! The climax of this extraordinarily fruitful and congenial collaboration is the Symphony No. 5 in B-flat Major.

“probably the finest [new performance] I've heard for a long time…Young manages the rare feat of honouring all Bruckner's changes of gear and tempo while keeping a powerful forward flow…no doubt I shall listen to other accounts which are as fine, but for the moment I find that hard to believe.” BBC Music Magazine, December 2015

“[This performance] shares many of the qualities of earlier releases in the series, notably the committed playing of the Hamburg orchestra as well as Young's confident navigation of Bruckner's symphonic architecture. Tempi are well judged throughout, the Scherzo in particular enjoying an easy forward momentum without the stridency that affects some performances.” Gramophone Magazine, October 2015

Bruckner: Symphony No. 9 in D Minor

Version in 3 movements

Live Recording.

Simone Young presents Anton Bruckner’s Ninth Symphony here in its three-movement version – the last movement was never completed by Bruckner and is therefore not included in this cycle. With Bruckner’s Fifth, which will be released by OehmsClassics in June, the cycle will be complete.

“Young directs a well-structured and persuasive interpretation of Bruckner's final symphony, making use of the most recent critical edition available” Gramophone Magazine, August 2015

Bruckner: Symphony No. 7 in E Major

Bruckner: Symphony No. 7 in E Major

The celebrated Bruckner cycle of the Hamburg Philharmonic under Simone Young will be completed during the 2014–15 season.

On 30 August 2014, this practiced Brucknerian orchestra recorded the Seventh Symphony in the Laeiszhalle live on CD. With the radiant beauty of its themes and its moving homage to Bruckner‘s great model, Wagner, this Symphony offers a particularly impressive listening experience.

“The most apposite word I can apply to Simone Young's approach to Bruckner is 'fluidity'…she allows the lyrical melodies of the first two movements to unfold naturally and with a good sense of structural cohesion” BBC Music Magazine, June 2015 ***

Bruckner: Symphony No. 6 in A major

Bruckner: Symphony No. 6 in A major

The 6th Symphony of Anton Bruckner was recorded live for SACD in December 2013 at two concerts in the Hamburg Laeiszhalle. Here, too, critics were unanimous in their enthusiasm, as could be read in the Hamburger Abendblatt of 16 December 2013: “…

This rendering of the 6th Symphony in A major became, on the part of the Philharmonic, a festival of precision and punctuality. No wonder: Simone Young showed tempi of an organic effect, bonding with her musicians in a convincingly dosed mixture of fire and soul.” (Tom R. Schulz, Hamburger Abendblatt). In addition, OehmsClassics is offering the conclusion of the Bruckner cycle with Simone Young during the first half of the year 2015. Symphonies Nos. 7, 9 & 5 will then be appearing by June.

“The Hamburg Philharmonic, with whom Simone Young is recording all the symphonies, has a great Bruckner tradition, and thanks to the fine recording the results are often resplendent.” BBC Music Magazine, June 2015 ****

Berlioz: Transcriptions for Organ with Hansjörg Albrecht

Berlioz: Transcriptions for Organ with Hansjörg Albrecht

Berlioz:

Symphonie fantastique, Op. 14

transcribed for organ

La Damnation de Faust, Op. 24: Rákóczi March

transcribed for organ

Hansjörg Albrecht (organ - Recorded at the Lucerne Cultural and Congress Centre, Switzerland)

Hansjörg Albrecht has selected the organ version of the Rákóczi March as the opening of his new SACD in our Organ Transcription Series. More or less as an overture, he makes a virtuoso piece out of it – a veritable display of fireworks in the style of Vladimir Horowitz and Franz Liszt (who wrote the piano transcription of the Symphonie fantastique). Together with the Symphonie fantastique, the series on SACD with Berlioz is now complete.

“The tonal and dynamic range of the IV/66 Goll instrument of 2000 adds clear-cut precision and ardent solo voices, yet Albrecht conjures ample romanticism throughout, not least through his intricate orchestral registration schemes and perfect playing.” Choir & Organ

Joseph Kelemen (Scherer Organ 1624, St. Stephan, Tangermünde)

This recording of works by Hieronymus and Jacob Praetorius, Jr. (father and son) leads listeners to the threshold of the Renaissance to the early Baroque period, with the origins of North German organ music.

Joseph Kelemen plays the Scherer Organ in Tangermünde. This organ of the Church of St Stephan in the Hanseatic city of Tangermünde was built by Hans Scherer the Younger together with his brother Fritz in the years 1623/24, as a gift from the city of Hamburg. It has over 32 stops on three manuals and pedals. About 50% of the pipes (including all the front pipes) as well as the carved casing have been preserved in their original form.

Mahler: Symphony No. 9 & Symphony No. 10 Adagio

Mahler: Symphony No. 9 & Symphony No. 10 Adagio

Mahler:

Symphony No. 9

Symphony No. 10 in F sharp major - Adagio

Now the second cycle with the Gürzenich Orchestra on OehmsClassics has also been completed: Markus Stenz has recorded all the Mahler Symphonies and the Wunderhorn (Youth‘s Magic Horn) Lieder for OehmsClassics. Just in time, for the last two symphonies (to be more precise, the Ninth and the Adagio first movement of the Tenth) are being issued before he leaves the city of Cologne as director of music.

“Everything we've come to expect from previous instalments reaches its apotheosis with these works. They may have been recorded in a studio...but there's still the same vividness and tendency to let each instrumental department shine. Most of Stenz's tempo changes feel perfectly right.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2014 ****

Bruckner: Symphony No. 00 in F minor 'Study Symphony'

Bruckner: Symphony No. 00 in F minor 'Study Symphony'

The Study Symphony is a summing-up of the craftsmanship acquired by Anton Bruckner – it did not particularly serve the development of his own artistic profile.

“It is”, evaluates his biographer Matthias Hansen, “as if Bruckner – one last time – wanted to play through what he had learned, taking great trouble and care not to forget the slightest detail”. Here, Bruckner tested the limits of the classical-romantic models, according to Hansen, “with a ‘borrowed’ looseness and flexibility, even with elegance” that he then dropped with the Symphony No.0.

“this latest instalment of Simone Young's Bruckner cycle has the sturdiness of an old oak: roots deep in the earth, branches of wisdom...The Philharmoniker Hamburg roared in Young's Bruckner Eighth but here they approach the material with poker-faced restraint and delicacy. This is a disc that makes you listen with fresh ears to this slice Brucknerian juvenilia.” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2014

“This minor piece has had a surprising number of recordings - more than his masterpieces had 50 years ago. Simone Young's live performance in her ongoing series is as good as any, and well recorded.” BBC Music Magazine, November 2014 ****

Mahler: Symphony No. 6 in A minor 'Tragic'

Mahler: Symphony No. 6 in A minor 'Tragic'

Gürzenich-Orchestra Köln, Markus Stenz

Mahler’s Sixth Symphony is a work full of extremes, as the penultimate release, Ohems presents a live recording from the Cologne Philharmonic under the baton of Markus Stenz.

“This superbly recorded account, taken from live performances in the Cologne‑Philharmonic Hall last November, has unanimity and a total sense of security...And however much he tightens the dramatic screw, especially in the closing pages of the finale, his performance never topples over into hysteria.” The Guardian, 15th May 2014 ****

“This is a compelling reading of Mahler’s Sixth and one of the high points of Stenz’s cycle. The playing is superb throughout and the engineers have done a fine job, producing sound of great clarity, depth and range.” MusicWeb International, 2nd June 2014

“Stenz is more objective in Mahler than some, more seduced by the letter of these scores than by their psychological projections.” Gramophone Magazine, August 2014
