This disc showcases developing musical styles used in films spanning nearly 30 years, beginning with Max Steiner’s theme to the original King Kong (1933) and moving on to merry old England for Eric Wolfgang Korngold’s theme to the spectacular 1938 film, The Adventures of Robin Hood. Alfred Hitchcock understood the vital role music plays in film. Miklós Rózsa’s suite from the 1945 thriller Spellbound captures the psychological suspense with the unique timbre of a theremin - Rózsa won his first Oscar for this score. Legendary film composer Bernard Herrmann’s overture to Hitchcock’s “wrong man” thriller, North by Northwest (1959) is next in the tracklist.

Aaron Copland lent his considerable talents to Hollywood on several occasions, including the 1947 screen adaptation of John Steinbeck’s The Red Pony, selections from the folk-like score are included here. Two Oscar-winning scores by Franz Waxman, one from Billy Wilder’s 1950 classic Sunset Boulevard, as well as A Place in the Sun the following year, deliver quintessential 50’s film music. Next is Alex North’s New Orleans-spiced 1951 score for A Streetcar Named Desire, the first important Hollywood score to incorporate jazz. The great Leonard Bernstein scored only one film, but On the Waterfront (1954) is widely regarded as cinematic classic.

Vintage Cinema then turns to the 1960s in its three final tracks: Rózsa’s Spanish-flavoured overture to the lavish Charlton Heston epic, El Cid (1961), Elmer Bernstein’s main title theme from To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), and the rousing “Ride of the Cossacks” from Taras Bulba, a 1962 film scored again by the inimitable Franz Waxman.

Mephisto Waltz No. 1

Cameron Carpenter’s Revolutionary threatens to turn the organ world upside down. Among organists it’s generally accepted that he’s unmatched technically, but this debut CD reveals that his approach to the organ is unlike anything currently in the market. He is such an exciting new artist that the Royal Albert Hall has invited him to make his debut performance in the UK in a solo recital on the 21st October

Cameron Carpenter has been lauded as “the Maverick organist”, “madly original”, and “a superstar of the 21st-century organ”. His debut recording, Revolutionary, showcases an artist who is not only breaking new ground, but who runs a musical gamut that any musician would be extremely hard-pressed to match. There are only four organ works included. Three are major pinnacles of the organ repertoire (Demessieux: Etude in Octaves;Dupré: Prelude and Fugue in B major; and Bach: Now Come, Saviour of the Gentiles) while the fourth is the world premiere recording of Cameron’s suggestive Love Song No. 1 (2008).

The album’s major departures are found in Duke Ellington’s Solitude (wittily combined with Bach’s Sheep May Safely Graze); Liszt’s Mephisto Waltz, and Vladimir Horowitz’ Carmen Variations. There are also two of Chopin’s Études in versions so convincing that they might have been organ music; and Cameron’s Evolutionary Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, an outrageous survey of the various instrumental arrangements that made Bach’s work famous.

The album was recorded not on a pipe organ, but on the equally revolutionary Marshall & Ogletree Virtual Pipe Organ at Trinity Church Wall Street in New York City – an organ that, rising out of the destruction of Trinity’s pipe organ on September 11, 2001, continues to challenge the status quo of the pipe organ and the artistic possibilities of organ playing in general.

Brahms - A German Requiem (SACD)

Brahms:

Ein Deutsches Requiem, Op. 45

Twyla Robinson (soprano) & Mariusz Kwiecien (baritone)

Atlanta Symphony Orchestra & Chorus, Robert Spano

Johannes Brahms wrote Ein deutsches Requiem (A German Requiem), Op. 45, following the deaths of his mother and Robert Schumann, his mentor. Although Brahms based his Requiem on scriptural passages, beginning and ending the work with a blessing “Blessed are they who mourn, for they shall be comforted” (Matthew 5:4), he didn’t write it as a religious piece concerning itself with the souls of the departed, but as a cantata whose message is of comfort, acceptance, peace, and serenity for those left behind.

Boléro

Cincinnati Pops, Erich Kunzel

This brand new recording opens with Maurice Ravel’s magnificent Boléro, known for its feverish, hypnotic rhythm and massive orchestral sound. Boléro, Ravel’s most famous piece, epitomises his preoccupation with restyling and reinventing dance movements. The listener is then taken to Baghdad circa 1071 A.D. with a medley from the classic 1953 musical Kismet. This Tony-award winning show was constructed entirely around the music of celebrated Russian composer Alexander Borodin. The listener journeys from Baghdad back to Spain with Suite Nos. 1 and 2 from Georges Bizet’s immensely popular opera, Carmen, and closes with Féte-Dieu à Séville from composer Isaac Albéniz.

Gandolfi - The Garden of Cosmic Speculation (SACD)

Gandolfi - The Garden of Cosmic Speculation (SACD)

Gandolfi:

The Garden of Cosmic Speculation

The Garden of Cosmic Speculation is an actual 30 acre garden located in the Borders area of Scotland. The creation of architect and critic Charles Jencks and his late wife, Maggie Keswick, the garden was a 15-year project which was inspired by fractals, genetics, chaos theory, waves and solitons. Jenck’s garden and resulting book captured the imagination of Michael Gandolfi, an American composer whose earliest musical experiences were in rock and jazz improvisation, which he explored as a self-taught guitarist. Later he became interested in music composition and pursued formal studies and is now faculty member of the New England Conservatory and the Tanglewood Music Centre. “I have long been interested in modern physics,” Gandolfi commented “and it seemed proper for music to participate in this magnificent joining of physics and architecture. I discovered The Garden of Cosmic Speculation, and after a month or so of sketching musical ideas, I decided to focus on several aspects of the garden to which I had the strongest musical response.

“Gandolfi has an admirable way with colour, rhythm and melodic transformation, creating music that is exuberant, compelling and entertaining.” BBC Music Magazine, May 2008 ****

Lieutenant Kijé Suite, Op. 60

“Jarvi does an artful job of demarcating Perokofiev’s mood-swings … The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra plays with prodigious energy and diligence that has been immaculately captured.” Classic FM Magazine

“Listenable as it is, this Fifth is not exactly high-octane and competition is fierce. The luminous glow cannot be gainsaid, yet the overall effect is worryingly small-scale, even unidiomatic. Lieutenant Kijé at least responds perfectly to this essentially colouristic treatment. ...with natural warmth, extended brass response and an iridescent sonic palette to perk up the most jaded audiophile.” Gramophone Magazine, March 2014

“[A] magnificent interpretation.” International Record Review
