Scheideman: Organ Works

Friedhelm Flamme (an der Fritzsche/Treutmann-Orgel der Schlosskirche St. Levin zu Harbke bei Helmstedt)

With Vol. 15 our comprehensive project featuring organ works of the Northern German Baroque on SACD is now complete. On the last release Friedhelm Flamme dedicates himself to the complete free organ works, that is, to the complete fugues and preludes, of Heinrich Scheidemann, a composer regarded as one of the cofounders of the Northern German organ school.. Scheidemann’s activity and influence on other organists and choirmasters brought him great respect in Hamburg’s music world, and he is regarded as one of the most significant composers of organ works from the early seventeenth century. Here we would like to thank our interpreter Friedhelm Flamme for his renderings of Northern German marvels of organ sound. His recordings demonstrate how genuine technique and virtuosity can be combined with intellectual probing to produce sensational results. The SACD recordings mean that the acoustic spaces of the selected historic churches form an integral part of the performances.

Jongen: Symphonie Concertante

Jongen: Symphonie Concertante

Jongen:

Passacaglie et Gigue for orchestra, Op. 90

Sonata Eroïca Op. 94

Symphonie Concertante for Organ & Orchestra, Op. 81

Christian Schmitt (organ)

Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrucken Kaiserslautern, Martin Haselbock

Since concertos for organ and orchestra are rare finds, it is no doubt Joseph Jongen’s Symphonie concertante, op.81, that has kept his name alive beyond Belgium’s borders. The three works recorded on this CD concentrate on the organ, the orchestra, and interaction between the two. Jongen has repeatedly been likened to his fellow Belgian César Franck, and the Sonata eroica concluding this CD is perhaps his most important solo organ work - even without the orchestra it might succeed in restoring the queen of instruments to its rightful place in the concert hall!

transcribed for piano and orchestra

Matthias Kirschnereit (piano)

Deutsche Kammerakademie Neuss, Lavard Skou Larsen

CPO present their last in the series of CDs featuring Handel’s organ concertos transcribed for piano and orchestra. These six concertos on this recording were all uniformly scored with two oboes, string orchestra, and a bass fortified by a bassoon, and display enthralling harmonic modulations and rhythmic variants. They are examples of Handel’s superior inspiration and interpreted with just as much ingenuity by Matthias Kirschnereit.

Along with other chorale fantasias and chorale preludes, vol.3 of our edition of Max Reger’s organ works presents his Twelve Pieces op.59. These works inaugurated Reger’s series of composite works intended for practical use in religious services. These are the only works by Reger based on Gregorian melodies, which, however in no way evoke modal harmonic structures but are fully integrated into his complex harmonic structures.

Respighi: Ancient Airs and Dances & The Birds

Respighi: Ancient Airs and Dances & The Birds

Respighi:

Ancient Airs and Dances, Suites Nos. 1, 2 & 3

The Birds

For this release, the Munich Radio Orchestra turn to the masterpieces of Ottorino Respighi. His Antiche danze ed arie, free arrangements of arias and dances from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, enables listeners to rediscover forgotten rhythms and tones. These works are complemented by his Gli Uccelli (The Birds) suite. In 1927 he drew on various harpsichord and lute miniatures for this “Suite for Small Orchestra,” producing picturesque snapshots here showing him from his admirable and remarkable side as a sensitive observer who discovers the pictorial element in all that he sees.

“Under violinist-conductor Henry Raudales, the Munich Radio Orchestra approach Respighi’s Baroque reworkings with fastidious care and exquisite attention to detail…his approach to Gli uccelli, meanwhile, is altogether more extrovert, and his breezy, almost casual way with the ‘Preludio’ comes as something of a surprise…like the rest of the disc [the Pines of Rome] is played with exceptionally beauty, and the recording itself is first-rate.” Gramophone Magazine, May 2016

Concerto Copenhagen, Lars Ulrik Mortensen

The Concerto Copenhagen, the leading Scandinavian ensemble for historical performance practice, is currently regarded worldwide as one of the most remarkable and imaginative orchestras in this field under its artistic director Lars Ulrik Mortensen. The orchestra’s vitality, sense of style, and communicative talent have become its trademarks.

Accordingly, we have decided to release Bach’s Mass in B minor on two SACDS (moreover, in quality surround sound) featuring this extraordinary ensemble and top-class soloists.

“To my mind, Mortensen’s special performance, which is full to the brim with insightful musicianship and has a refreshing avoidance of contrived formulas, comfortably joins Parrott (EMI), Junghänel and John Butt (Linn) as the finest examples of this kind of perspective on performing Bach’s monumental sacred masterpiece.” Gramophone Magazine, March 2016

“I’ll highlight ‘Confiteor’ (Credo) where the solace derived from the ‘remission of sins’ is realised in Mortensen’s performance with translucent tenderness…[Mortensen’s concertino team] is the strongest I’ve yet heard” Early Music Today, August 2016 *****

Larsson: Orchestral Works, Vol. 2

Larsson: Orchestral Works, Vol. 2

Larsson, L-E:

Barococo Suite for Orchestra, Op. 64

Symphony No. 2, Op. 17

Variations for Orchestra, Op. 50

CPO present the eagerly anticipated second volume of orchestral works by Lars-Erik Larsson, one of today’s most popular contemporary-classical composers in Sweden and beyond.

Varied examples of his compositions feature on this release. His Symphony No.2, where the composer has enhanced the cyclical structure of the work by reducing the number of movements to three, the Orchestral Variations op.50 which offer exemplary documentation of the free twelve-tone style of Larsson’s mature years, and the later Barococo Suite op.64, which displays an astonishingly youthful freshness and demonstrates the timeless power of the music.

“the players of the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra are put on their collective mettle and, under Andrew Manze's firm and clear direction, they shine…splendid sound once again from CPO, in the warm acoustic of Helsingborg's Konserthuset” Gramophone Magazine, January 2016

Stimmwerck

Here, Stimmwerck, the ingenious German vocal quartet, sets out on exciting and unknown paths of European musical history. The recording, featuring late medieval motets and songs by Brassart, Martini, Roullet and anonymous composers from various manuscript sources, offers an in-depth cross section of early vocal music in which the joie de vivre and profound piety of that epoch are uniquely experienced.

“Stimmwerck's approach is refreshingly straightforward: these are considered, elegantly executed interpretations, delivered without frills - demonstration, if any were needed, that all that this music requires is that it be sung well. The carol-like Novus annus, for example, is immediately engaging, the quartet's bright timbre complementing its lilting loveliness.” Gramophone Magazine, October 2015
