Bach, C P E: Hamburg Symphonies (6) for Strings, Wq. 182 (H567-662)

“Seldom has a musical composition of a more exalted, saucy, and humorous character poured forth from such an ingenious soul.” This is what the Allgemeine Musikalische Zeitung reported following a private performance of the works of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. We should not forget that while we now consider Johann Sebastian Bach as one of the greatest musical geniuses, even during his lifetime the name “Bach” was principally associated with his second son, Carl Philipp Emanuel.

From the total of 19 Symphonies that C.P.E. Bach wrote, six are released on this album. These six String Symphonies, commissioned in 1773 by Bach’s patron Gottfried van Swieten, perfectly represent the late 18th century Sturm und Drang movement in music. They are performed by world renowned harpsichordist and conductor Trevor Pinnock and “his” (The) English Concert, the orchestra he founded in 1972 and led for the next thirty years, and with which he pioneered performance on historical instruments.

The recording was made at the Henry Wood Hall in London in October 1979 and will now be added to PENTATONE’s revealing REMASTERED CLASSICS Series. This SACD will give the listener a chance to enjoy in full detail the ground-breaking work of Trevor Pinnock and The English Concert.

Jonathan Freeman-Attwood’s ‘A Bach Notebook for Trumpet’ is a celebration of the music of the famous Johann Sebastian and ten other lesser-known Bachs, re-imagined for the combination of trumpet and piano.

Bach specialist Daniel-Ben Pienaar has arranged music from a great uncle, close cousins, distant cousins, and five sons, all related to the great J. S. Bach in a wholly unique recital programme.

Aesthetic passions drive the repertoire and performance choices as the duo explore vocabularies not usually associated with trumpet and piano chamber music: brushing up against ‘period’ gesture, ornamentation and articulation, whilst also co-referencing less fashionable inspirations from the past, including those judged ‘romantic’ in coloration, whether in the use of the pedal, rubati or articulation.

Jonathan is an established authority on Bach interpretation, particularly as it challenges and refocuses historical  perspectives on ‘performance practices’ and how recordings of the past can influence current priorities and tastes.

As a trumpet player and recording artist, Jonathan Freeman-Attwood has attracted plaudits from the press; his producing career has resulted in over 200 recordings and several awards including Diapasons d’Ors, eight Gramophone Awards and many nominations.

Jonathan broadcasts regularly for BBC Radio 3 and is in demand as an essayist for EMI, Warner, Deutsche Grammophon and other major record labels.

Daniel-Ben is active as a recitalist and chamber musician. He has received great acclaim for his interpretations of Bach’s keyboard music: ‘Pienaar produces a breathless, highly energised reading’ Gramophone on his Goldberg Variations.

C. P. E Bach - Magnificat & Die Himmel Erzahlen Die Ehre Gottes

C. P. E Bach - Magnificat & Die Himmel Erzahlen Die Ehre Gottes

World Premiere Recordings

Bach, C P E:

Magnificat in D, Wq. 215 (H772)

Die Himmel erzählen die Ehre Gottes (H821e)

Basler Madrigalisten & L’arpa festante, Fritz Näf (director)

C. P. E. Bach regarded the 1749 Leipzig early version of his Magnificat as one of his most important works. It contains all the elements which aesthetics of the time demanded of a large-scale sacred composition: nobility, polyphonic and concertante choruses, deeply-felt arias, and a great concluding double fugue. The festive music Die Himmel erzählen die Ehre Gottes was written during Bach’s later years as director of music in Hamburg.

Concertos for Flute & Harp

Concertos for Flute & Harp

Bach, C P E:

Flute Concerto in D minor, Wq. 22 (H425)

Henze, H:

Trascrizione per flauto, arpa ed archi della Clavier-Fantasie con accompagnamento di un violino

Mozart:

Flute & Harp Concerto in C major, K299

Maria Munoz (flute), Sarah O'Brien (harp)

On this recording, the music of Bach – paired with works by Henze and Mozart in terms of the programme selection as well as from an art-historical perspective – serves as a spring-board for a series of music-historical interconnections within its own musical cosmos. Towards the end of the eighteenth century, the name Bach was primarily associated with Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714–1788), who had become famous through the publication of his ‘Essay on the True Art of Playing Keyboard Instruments’ in 1753. C.P.E. Bach’s music was the immediate starting point for Hans Werner Henze (1926–2012) conception of musical and aesthetic history as well as for his work as a composer, so for example in his interpretative transcription of one of Bach’s Fantasias. Wolfgang Amadé Mozart (1756–1791) relation-ship to Carl Philipp Emanuel, who was 42 years his senior, was much more ambivalent, as there are hardly any explicit references to Bach in Mozart’s music.

A truly uplifting recording” International Record Review, May 2014

Miklós Spányi (clavichord)

With this disc, Miklós Spányi completes C.P.E. Bach's set of ‘Zweyte Fortsetzung’ Sonatas, in itself a continuation of two previous sets (Wq 50 and 51). The composer himself clearly regarded the 18 sonatas of these sets as a major achievement. All of them are substantial works but the three included here might be considered the most diverse and original of the entire series.

“Spányi is, as ever, a fastidious player, keenly attuned to Bach's particular brand of Empfindsamkeit, especially in the quasi-improvisatory slow movements.” Gramophone Magazine, June 2015

“Miklós Spányi’s choice of instruments makes this series so enjoyable. Whether it be fortepiano, tangent piano, or Emanuel’s favourite instrument, the clavichord, Spányi has the ability to bring this beautiful music to life...This is an excellent disc.” MusicWeb International, 27th March 2015

Sivan Magen (harp)

Harpist Sivan Magen dazzles audiences wherever he goes with his formidable virtuosity and demonstrably perfect technique. Recorded at the famous Yehudi Menuhin School in Surrey, ‘Fantasien’ marks Magen’s Linn debut. The recording is a showcase of the modern concert harp demonstrating the powerful expression, dynamic range and sheer excitement this popular instrument can generate in the right hands.

Featuring transcriptions of works by J.S. Bach, C.P.E. Bach, Mozart and Brahms plus original harp compositions by the lesser known Henriette Rénie and Ekaterina Walter-Kühne, ‘Fantasien’ is united by the theme of fantasy.

Sivan Magen has recorded two previous albums, both of which received critical-acclaim; his Britten recital was listed in the New York Times’ ‘Best Recordings of 2012’.

Praised by the press as ‘a magician’ (WQXR, New York), of ‘unheard of depth of colours, range of expression and rhetorical flow’ (American Record Guide), Sivan Magen is the only Israeli to have ever won the prestigious International Harp Contest in Israel. Magen also won the Pro Musicis International Award in New York and the Borletti-Buitoni Trust’s 2012 Award for exceptional young musicians.

Magen has given solo recitals in New York (Merkin Hall, Carnegie’s Weill Hall), London (Wigmore Hall) and Amsterdam (Musiekgebouw); his chamber music commitments have taken him to Paris (Salle Gaveau) and New York (Allice Tully Hall, the Metropolitan Museum, Bargemusic), as well as several International Chamber Music festivals.

“In the wrong hands CPE Bach's H277 Fantasy can easily disintegrate into series of rhetorical gestures, but Magen takes us into a rarefied of magical colours and dynamic shadings that creates the strange impression of the notes floating free of musical gravity.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2014 *****
