'Pro Pacem' consists of 23 pieces from the Alia Vox catalogue with repertoire from 5 centuries of music; of Gilles Binchois (XVth Century) to Arvo Pärt (new recording).

The cover art was designed by Catalan painter Antoni Tapiès shortly before his death in February. The 1000-page book features texts by renowned writers, like the French scholar Edgar Morin. This is an essential contribution by Jordi Savall about the world as it is and as it should be, thanks to the power of music.

“The period instrument specialists from Savall's Hespèrion XXI and voices from La Capella Reial de Catalunya lay down beautifully simple settings for guest vocalists from various cultures, notably the gorgeous tones of Montserrat Figueras.” The Independent, 29th December 2012 *****

“An ambitious programme flows, from cantorial invocations and Gregorian chant, to motets by Binchois, Josquin, Guerrero and Pärt, stretching across 19 centuries of conflict. The common cause is peace, as expressed in song, painting and essay.” The Independent on Sunday, 16th December 2012 *****

Jesus autem transiens/Credo in Deum

While the latter half of the sixteenth century saw the first stirrings of the Baroque, this period also witnessed the creation of the finest cathedrals in sound, with their foundations in the distant Gothic era of music ... Composers vied with each other in daring and ingenuity, presenting works with twelve, sixteen, twenty-four and even, in the case of Tallis’s famous Spem in alium, forty different voices! The Huelgas Ensemble celebrates its thirty-fifth anniversary with a spectacular selection of these works, recorded live without a ‘safety net’.

“...as the many polyphonic strands surround you – and here they do surround you, thanks to this hybrid SACD – you’d have to have a cold heart not to be caught up in the performances. The ingenuity of the composers is extraordinary” Andrew McGregor, bbc.co.uk, 14th February 2007

“this live recording testifies to their astonishing dynamism, energy and coherence.” Gramophone Magazine

New York Polyphony: Geoffrey Williams (countertenor), Geoffrey Silver (tenor), Christopher Dylan Herbert (baritone) & Craig Phillips (bass)

The four members of New York Polyphony here present a programme which explores the themes of grief, loss and mortality.

Apart from the work by Jackson Hill on Guillaume de Machaut’s famous 14th century rondeau Ma fin… and two examples of plainsong, all works included on this disc, the ensemble’s first on BIS, were composed by masters of the Franco-Flemish school of polyphony from the first half of the 16th century.

Most of this music was partly used liturgically: the two Gregorian chants Libera me and In paradisum both form part of the Roman Catholic burial service

New York Polyphony was formed in 2006 and is establishing a reputation as an exceptionally fine vocal chamber ensemble.

“With an atmospheric cover of a destroyed chapel interior, this disc of mainly 16th-century vocal music is all about death and decay...Plainsong interleaves the polyphony: the effect is ethereally beautiful, but the tone is surely too unvaried and unbroken.” The Observer, 22nd July 2012

Atrium Musicæ de Madrid, Gregorio Paniagua

Setting off on a sonic journey through Europe, Gregorio Paniagua and his acclaimed ensemble Atrium Musicæ de Madrid took the famous theme known as La Spagna, used widely by composers across Europe for several centuries, as the starting point in their quest to bring to life the many and varied old scores that used this themes.

In their recording, the ensemble used a huge range of instruments, from clavicytherium (a ‘vertical harpsichord’) to a simple plastic cup, and the vivid performances and no less vivid recording enchanted both early music fans and audiophiles.

This is the first re-edition of the entire programme from this legendary 1980 recording.
