Organ works by Dupré, Swayne, Jongen & Bridge

Organ works by Dupré, Swayne, Jongen & Bridge

Deux Esquisses pour orgue, Op. 41

Jongen:

Sonata Eroïca Op. 94

Riff-Raff for organ, Op. 34

Tobias Frank (organ)

This disc presents a contrast of organ works that demonstrate considerable stylistic differences despite being written within a relatively short period of time. Joseph Jongen and Frank Bridge composed in a largely traditional style unlike their contemporaries at the time, namely Schönberg, Berg and Boulez, who explored more innovative music. Marcel Dupré and Giles Swayne, however, quickly abandoned the conventional musical styles of their home countries and developed new musical aesthetics which encompass innovative ideas and concepts.

The SACD sound quality makes organ sound all the more resonant.

“Frank plays this interesting programme with a strong sense of flair. Although the booklet's documentation is only adequate, the recorded sound is spectacularly good.” Gramophone Magazine, July 2009

Cameron Carpenter’s Revolutionary threatens to turn the organ world upside down. Among organists it’s generally accepted that he’s unmatched technically, but this debut CD reveals that his approach to the organ is unlike anything currently in the market. He is such an exciting new artist that the Royal Albert Hall has invited him to make his debut performance in the UK in a solo recital on the 21st October

Cameron Carpenter has been lauded as “the Maverick organist”, “madly original”, and “a superstar of the 21st-century organ”. His debut recording, Revolutionary, showcases an artist who is not only breaking new ground, but who runs a musical gamut that any musician would be extremely hard-pressed to match. There are only four organ works included. Three are major pinnacles of the organ repertoire (Demessieux: Etude in Octaves;Dupré: Prelude and Fugue in B major; and Bach: Now Come, Saviour of the Gentiles) while the fourth is the world premiere recording of Cameron’s suggestive Love Song No. 1 (2008).

The album’s major departures are found in Duke Ellington’s Solitude (wittily combined with Bach’s Sheep May Safely Graze); Liszt’s Mephisto Waltz, and Vladimir Horowitz’ Carmen Variations. There are also two of Chopin’s Études in versions so convincing that they might have been organ music; and Cameron’s Evolutionary Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, an outrageous survey of the various instrumental arrangements that made Bach’s work famous.

The album was recorded not on a pipe organ, but on the equally revolutionary Marshall & Ogletree Virtual Pipe Organ at Trinity Church Wall Street in New York City – an organ that, rising out of the destruction of Trinity’s pipe organ on September 11, 2001, continues to challenge the status quo of the pipe organ and the artistic possibilities of organ playing in general.

Dubois, T:

Dupré:

Gigout:

Grand Choeur dialogue

Gounod:

Fantaisie sur l’hymne national russe

Guilmant:

Allegro, Op. 81

Final alla Schumann sur un Noël Languedocien, Op. 83

Saint-Saëns:

Cyprès et Litanie

“Orchestral music lovers, organ buffs and hi-fi enthusiasts will be well satisfied with the epic sonic splendour of this CD from the combined forces of the BBC Philharmonic and the fivemanual, 146-stop Willis organ of Liverpool Anglican Cathedral. Dubois, Gigout and Guilmant may be better known to organists than anyone else but they're capable of composing music which can easily withstand comparison with the works by the more famous Dupré, Gounod and Saint-Saëns.
With all the composers the emphasis is on strong, heroic melodies, adventurous harmonies and key changes, and the fullest exploitation of the ever-increasing resources of the post-Berlioz symphony orchestra and the French Cavaillé-Coll organ. Dubois's, Gigout's and Gounod's pieces are undemanding essays in triumphal march-like compositions; more thoughtful and interesting music with some magical orchestral effects is to be found in the works by Dupré, Guilmant and Saint-Saëns.
Ian Tracey finds suitably Gallic colours from the Willis organ and he, Rumon Gamba and the BBC Phil achieve impeccable ensemble and balance in their fine performances. It's a pity, though, that this CD wasn't recorded in a different venue as in the cathedral there's an uncomfortable contrast between the immediate sound of the orchestra at floor level and the more distant sound of the organ pipes higher up and spread around the building. Despite these obstacles, full marks to Chandos for its excellent engineering.”
