Haydn, Schubert & Widmann: String Quartets

Haydn, Schubert & Widmann: String Quartets

Haydn:

String Quartet, Op. 76 No. 2 in D minor 'Fifths'

Schubert:

String Quartet No. 14 in D minor, D810 'Death and the Maiden'

Widmann, J:

String Quartet No. 3 'Hunting'

Ragazze Quartet

This is ‘Vivere’. Not exactly a cheerful disc - all three compositions refer in various ways to death. This is reflected in the key (D minor is the key of death), in the opposite number of the Maiden, and finally even literally, in the fact that cellist Geneviève 'dies' before the end of the album. For us, however, to record this dramatic repertoire is to offer an ode to life. ‘Vivere’ - for by listening to this sombre music one realises how wonderful life can be. Performed by the Ragazze Quartet, four young women in the midst of life. The Ragazze Quartet is a young, Dutch string quartet, remarkable for its musical enthusiasm, talent, versatility and presentation. Its versatility in particular is unusual within the world of chamber music.

The quartet collaborates with and performs alongside composers, other musicians - classical or otherwise - and artists working in a variety of disciplines. In such projects the Ragazze Quartet always operates from its classical music core, while attempting to attain the ultimate crossover. The different disciplines are approached entirely equally, but in so doing they complement and elevate one another.

The quartet followed the two-year full-time curriculum of the Dutch String Quartet Academy (NSKA). There the members attended masterclasses directed by leading musicians from the international string quartet world, as well as lessons from their regular teachers Stefan Metz and Marc Danel. After completing the academy course the quartet was coached for a year by Luc Marie Aguera, violinist in the Quatuor Ysaye; this was made possible by the Dutch Kersjes Foundation.

Haydn: The Creation

Haydn: The Creation

Amanda Forsythe (soprano), Keith Jameson (tenor) & Kevin Deas (bass-baritone)

Boston Baroque, Martin Pearlman

The three-time Grammy-nominated ensemble, widely regarded as ‘one of the world’s premier period instruments bands’ (Fanfare), will mark the beginning of its relationship with Linn with a recording of Haydn’s The Creation.

Soloists Amanda Forsythe, Keith Jameson and Kevin Deas will join the ensemble and conductor Martin Pearlman for the performance of Haydn’s crowning achievement.

The Creation remains one of the greatest works of choral repertoire and has been astonishing audiences since its premiere in 1798.

The ensemble’s previous performances of The Creation have received rave reviews, with the Boston Globe stating: ‘Boston Baroque performed [Haydn’s Creation] with vibrant color and a fleet momentum…and made it a vivid, effervescent occasion.’

Founded in 1973 by Martin Pearlman, Boston Baroque is already familiar to an international audience with its critically acclaimed catalogue of recordings.

Boston Baroque's recordings—of which Fanfare magazine wrote ‘each one is an incomparable gem’— are heard by millions on classical radio stations in North America and Europe.

Boston Baroque's many career milestones include the American premiere of Rameau's Zoroastre; a Mozart opera series including Marriage of Figaro, Così fan tutte, and the American period-instrument premieres of Mozart's Don Giovanni and The Magic Flute; and a revelatory exploration of the Beethoven symphonies on period instruments.

“Pearlman adopts near-ideal tempi for every number, and his choir and period band — medium forces for a work the composer conducted with up to 200 — are excellent. Two of his soloists, Amanda Forsythe and Kevin Jameson, sound more like cheeky servants than Archangels, but Kevin Deas’s resonant bass notes and liquid baritone ones are perfect for Raphael and Adam.” Sunday Times, 29th July 2012

“[a] clean account, nicely scaled and finely balanced...There's skilful work throughout from the three soloists...Pearlman displays a keen sense of the music's shape and encompasses its range of character without over-emphasis. The overall sound picture is perfectly arranged for definition as well as grandeur.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2012 ****

“Weil's conception of the work has changed little since his Sony recording with Tafelmusik nearly 20 years ago: brisk, no-nonsense choral singing, topped by eager, bright-edged (if not always perfectly-tuned) boys of the Tolzer Knabenchor; excellent choral-orchestral balance...Where Weil, 2012 vintage, scores decisively over his earlier recording is in his soloists...Best is Kevin Deas...with as sonorous a lower register...as any Raphael on disc.” Gramophone Magazine, October 2012

“Forsythe has a most pleasing voice, bright, clear and readily communicative. She has the agility required...and there is a smile in her voice that is very winning...[Jameson] gets right inside the text, his singing most musical, with a particularly satisfying legato...In all, this is a delightful, charming and often moving performance on a smallish scale, one that you may find rather lacking in drama.” International Record Review, September 2012

Haydn: The Seasons

Haydn: The Seasons

Sung in German

Slimline double case and 36pp book

DSD recording, live at the Barbican 26–27 June 2010

In 2009 LSO Live released an acclaimed recording of Haydn’s Creation conducted by Sir Colin Davis. For his next release Sir Colin returns to the music of Haydn with a superb cast of young singers for his later oratorio The Seasons.

Following the success of Die Schöpfung (The Creation), which had swiftly gained popularity throughout Europe, Haydn’s librettist Baron Gottfried van Swieten suggested another project, based on James Thomson’s pastoral epic, The Seasons. One of Haydn’s last major works, Die Jahreszeiten depicts the yearly cycle of life in the countryside through the eyes of three peasants, providing us with music of thrilling vitality and creativity.

Sir Colin’s recent LSO Live releases have included Nielsen’s Symphonies Nos. 4 & 5 (Editor’s Choice Gramophone, BBC Music Magazine Choice, Disc of the Month Hi-Fi News) and a disc featuring Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast and Symphony No 1.

CONCERT REVIEW:

“The sun had been shining all Sunday, but the LSO and Chorus had their own fount of light and life on hand; Colin Davis, injecting even more joy into Haydn’s last oratorio. It was happiness that above all characterised Davis’s ruddy-cheeked, rhythmically precise performance. In this monument to the Enlightenment, enlightenment began with the choice of soloists. Miah Persson, Jeremy Ovenden and Andrew Foster-Williams each had their own timbre, but stayed united in expressive clarity. The crowning glory was the London Symphony Chorus. With secure pitch, continuous glee and warmth they pounced upon everything that Haydn bequeathed” The Times

“In The Seasons, as Robbins Landon says, old Haydn is “describing things — the first glow of dawn on the horizon, the hazy heat of midsummer, the ripe fields of autumn — which will soon retreat beyond his grasp”. Yet he does so with undiminished energy.” Sunday Telegraph, 29th May 2011 ***

“Davis’s affection is palpable at every turn of this handsomely balanced reading. The London Symphony Orchestra plays beautifully for him, supplying colorful detail for the music’s frequent descriptive effects...The soloists are also strong, especially the pure-voiced soprano Miah Persson...The London Symphony Chorus, 100-plus strong, musters ample sound for the big outbursts and also handles contrapuntal numbers with precision.” Classical Review, 30th May 2011

“For the unmistakable mark of Sir Colin Davis alone, and a performance under his direction of Haydn's extensive oratorio The Seasons that oozes operatic exuberance and nature-fed optimism at its broadest level, this latest LSO Live disc is genuinely attractive” The Scotsman, 8th June 2011

“From cheeky surface details to the underlying sense of optimism, Colin Davis is alive to every nuance of Haydn's late masterpiece. The conductor's lightness of touch allows the music to flow like quicksilver, albeit without undermining the work's long-range architecture...The soloists are also on beguiling form.” Classic FM Magazine, August 2011 *****

“Sir Colin Davis's live account is founded on purposive modern-instrument playing and the conductor's own irrepressible dynamism; in this early eighties, he continues to show a sharp-eared appreciation of the characteristic detail of Haydn's writing...the performance displays clarity and precision: the sound articulates the complex texutres neatly, allowing Haydn's remarkable scoring and and highly effective vocal writing to register to delightful effect.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2011 ****

“he is as responsive as ever to both the zest and humour of this most joyous of oratorios...Fugues always unfold with cumulative power...[The LSO chorus] sing with spirit, crisp diction and plenty of punch at climaxes - impressive agility, too......All three soloists are well-chosen...this exhilarating and affectionate LSO performance can be recommended to anyone wanting The Seasons in German, performed with modern instruments” Gramophone Magazine, September 2011

“how the LSO so instinctively finds the right kind of scale for playing Haydn is miraculous!...Miah Persson as Jane is all innocence and freshness, without the least diminution of tonal fullness; Jeremy Ovenden as Lucas reminds one with his flexibility and lovely open sound of Philip Langridge occasionally (there can be no higher praise); and Andrew Foster-Williams as Simon is a real bass, excelling as ploughman or huntsman and never turning cavernous.” International Record Review, July/August 2011

Rachel Podger - Mozart & Haydn Concertos

Rachel Podger - Mozart & Haydn Concertos

Haydn:

Violin Concerto No. 1 in C major, Hob.VIIa:1

Violin Concerto No. 4 in G major, Hob.VIIa:4

Mozart:

Sinfonia Concertante for Violin, Viola & Orchestra in E flat major, K364

with Pavlo Beznosiuk (viola)

Rachel Podger’s first recording with orchestra since the landmark Gramophone Award winning disc of Vivaldi’s La Stravaganza.

Follows eight volumes of the Award Winning Mozart Violin Sonatas edition.

Rachel Podger challenges Pavlo Beznosiuk.

Soloists play on real ‘Strads’.

“…Rachel Podger…silvery-toned, subtly nuanced 1739 Pesarinius violin and intent direction of the strings of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment find a genuine eloquence in the Adagio of the otherwise unremarkable G major Concerto. Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante is... a masterpiece unique even in his output for the almost operatic interplay between its solo violin and viola protagonists... Podger's almost 'speaking' line contrasts with the more 'masculine' tones of Pavlo Beznosiuk. Others have wrung even more pathos from the somber Andante, but this scarcely alloys the warmth and life of the reading.” BBC Music Magazine, Christmas 2009 ****

“Podger makes a strong case for Haydn's concertos… the sound has a warm glow that enhances her standpoint that these works are not lightweight nonentities. Slow movements are particularly profound…” Gramophone Magazine, December 2009

“...the OAE accompanies with poise and discretion, allowing Podger's consummate talent to shine through.” The Observer, 29th November 2009
