‘An American soldier says, “I was like wow” at the moment when he is describing his violent experiences during the Iraq war. This showed me that words and exclamations like “ wow” are used to indicate that something has made a deep impression, regardless of whether that impression is positive or negative; you can be impressed by something in all kinds of different ways. That’s what gave me the idea of finding pieces for my new CD, ‘I was like WOW!’ that had all impressed me deeply for all different kinds of reasons, pieces that for some reason had given me a ‘wow’ feeling.’ Jörgen van Rijen

Van Rijen, ‘the real ambassador of his instrument’ won many awards and prizes: winner of prestigious Netherlands Music Prize, First Prizes at the international trombone competitions in Guebwiller and Toulon, winner of Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award.

“…it is van Rijen's sense of line that is the most impressive feature of his playing, reliant on musicianship rather than physical dexterity. …his virtuoso technique need fear no comparison with the best in this field.” Gramophone Magazine, October 2009

Tobias Frank (organ)

This disc presents a contrast of organ works that demonstrate considerable stylistic differences despite being written within a relatively short period of time. Joseph Jongen and Frank Bridge composed in a largely traditional style unlike their contemporaries at the time, namely Schönberg, Berg and Boulez, who explored more innovative music. Marcel Dupré and Giles Swayne, however, quickly abandoned the conventional musical styles of their home countries and developed new musical aesthetics which encompass innovative ideas and concepts.

The SACD sound quality makes organ sound all the more resonant.

“Frank plays this interesting programme with a strong sense of flair. Although the booklet's documentation is only adequate, the recorded sound is spectacularly good.” Gramophone Magazine, July 2009
