Mozart: Piano Concertos Nos. 19 & 23

Mozart: Piano Concertos Nos. 19 & 23

Mozart:

Piano Concerto No. 19 in F major, K459

Piano Concerto No. 23 in A major, K488

Ronald Brautigam (fortepiano)

Die Kölner Akademie, Michael Alexander Willens

Ronald Brautigam has been described as ‘an absolutely instinctive Mozartian… with melodic playing of consummate beauty’ (International Record Review), supported by the period orchestra Die Kölner Akademie in a partnership which more than one reviewer has termed ‘ideal’.

The Concerto in A major is one of only three piano concertos in which Mozart uses clarinets, resulting in an especially magical slow movement. Mozart described it as one of his most select compositions ‘which I keep just for myself and an élite circle of music lovers’.

Noriko Ogawa plays Mozart Piano Sonatas Nos. 10-12

Noriko Ogawa plays Mozart Piano Sonatas Nos. 10-12

Mozart:

Piano Sonata No. 10 in C major, K330

Piano Sonata No. 11 in A major, K331 'Alla Turca'

Piano Sonata No. 12 in F major, K332

Noriko Ogawa (piano)

Noriko Ogawa follows her recordings of Debussy’s solo piano works (BISCD1955/56) and Rachmaninov’s First and Fourth Piano Concertos (BIS-CD-975) with three piano sonatas by Mozart.

The three sonatas here are often grouped together as ‘the Paris Sonatas’.

At the time, Mozart was establishing himself in Vienna, and composed piano sonatas to exploit the growing market for printed music and to use as teaching material.

More than 200 years later these particular sonatas remain among Mozart’s best-loved compositions.

“Throughout this warmly engineered release, Ogawa sustains a wonderful lightness of touch utilising the pedal very sparingly and ensuring that all textures are crystal-clear. Among the many things that are admirable about her performances, I noted in particular the subtle gradation of dynamics in the way she shapes the opening melody in the Allegro moderato of K330...and the little touches of infectious humour” BBC Music Magazine, May 2013 ****

Mozart:

Piano Concerto No. 17 in G major, K453

Piano Concerto No. 26 in D major, K537 'Coronation'

Ronald Brautigam (fortepiano)

Die Kölner Akademie, Michael Alexander Willens

Ronald Brautigam returns with the third instalment in his series of Mozart’s piano concertos and is joined again by Die Kölner Akademie conducted by Michael Alexander Willens.

The present disc includes Piano Concerto No.26 in D major, K 537, nicknamed the ‘Coronation Concerto’. Although the title page stated the work was ‘performed by the composer at Frankfurt-am-Main on the occasion of the Coronation of Emperor Leopold II’, the concert took place a week after the actual coronation, and was not part of the official festivities.

It is here preceded by Piano Concerto No.17 in G major, K 453, one of the rare concertos that Mozart composed with another soloist than himself in mind – in this case his student Barbara Ployer.

“His playing has energy, sparkle, grace and clarity - points are never laboured but there is real personality. The dialogue between the soloist and orchestra is effortlessly managed thanks to careful balance, and there's a feeling of joyous engagement throughout the performance...The SACD sound is superb: open, clear and always in focus” International Record Review, December 2012

“This is a really fine performance [of K453], with the slow movement's sublime interplay between piano and winds perfectly judged, and the wit and drama of the variation finale vividly handled - especially in the opera buffa coda, where you can almost smell the greasepaint.” BBC Music Magazine, January 2013 ****

“Brautigam's sinuous reading of K453, which makes much of Mozart's long, lolloping lines, has elegance to spare. But he doesn't lose sight of the more mischievous elements either...[the fortepiano] has tremendous clarity throughout its range” Gramophone Magazine, April 2013

La Machine de l’être – a monodrama

Anu Komsi, Finland’s ‘coloratura assoluta’, here presents a wide-ranging programme, from mad scenes and rage arias from 18th- and 19th-century operas, to Alyabyev’s ever-soaring Nightingale and the silvery tinkling of Lakmé’s Bell Song.

Komsi also performs later examples of coloratura, including Glière’s glittering Concerto for coloratura and orchestra, and La Machine de l’être by the composer John Zorn – a work which she premiered in New York City in 2011.

The disc closes with a thoroughly idiomatic performance of Sibelius’ Luonnotar, with its text from the Finnish national epos Kalevala.

Throughout the programme, Anu Komsi is supported by the Lahti Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sakari Oramo.

“Are coloratura soprano showcases ever supposed to be this provocative?...Placing Gliere and Zorn on the same disc is a brilliant stroke of programming. Komsi is at her inventive best in creating subtexts to the wordless vocal lines, suggesting a sunny lifetime of experience in Gliere...[Her] artistry comes together fully in Sibelius's Luonnotar” Gramophone Magazine, January 2013

“Anu Komsi's cosmopolitan experience and technical expertise show in the breadth and quality of her programme. And Sakari Oramo makes much of her accompaniments.” BBC Music Magazine, March 2013 ***
