Vivaldi: Dixit Dominus & In furore iustissimae irae

Vivaldi: Dixit Dominus & In furore iustissimae irae

Handel:

Dixit Dominus, HWV 232

Vivaldi:

Dixit Dominus, RV807

In furore iustissimae irae, RV626

Lucy Crowe (soprano)

La Nuova Musica, David Bates

David Bates directs La Nuova Musica in a pair of contrasting settings of Psalm 109.

Handel's masterful and ambitious HWV282 was penned in 1707 during a youthful visit to Italy. Vivaldi's vivid and economical RV807 (his third Dixit Dominus) was long mistakenly attributed to Baldassare Galuppi; it probably dates from the early 1730s. Rounding out the programme is Vivaldi's dazzling motet for solo voice, "In furore iustissimae irae", featuring soprano Lucy Crowe.

“Bates wisely judges that the pace of the opening chorus [of the Handel] should be dictated by the singers' natural declamation of the line...I particularly appreciated Crowe's gorgeous soft singing” Gramophone Magazine, May 2013

Vivaldi: La cetra - 12 concerti, Op. 9

Vivaldi: La cetra - 12 concerti, Op. 9

Rachel Podger (violin)

Holland Baroque Society

After recording Vivaldi's set of Violin Concertos 'La Stravaganza', Opus 4, in 2003, Rachel Podger has been immersed in music by Mozart and Bach on disc. But it has now felt right to come back to the Venetian Maestro, whose sense of drama she adores: “This time I chose his opus 9, the set of 12 Violin concertos entitled 'La Cetra'. There are plenty of jewels in this set, just as in 'La Stravaganza', with even higher technical demands made on the soloist including many, often exotic experimental effects.”

"What I like most of all is her evident relish of the virtuoso demands that the music makes: she rises splendidly to them, making the most of Vivaldi’s extravagant writing” Gramophone: Awards 2003 (Vivaldi, 'La Stravaganza')

“Podger has one of the sweetest tones of any period-instrument violinist.” BBC Music Magazine (Bach Violin Concertos)

“Personality and charisma can easily be found in Rachel Podger’s account of Vivaldi’s violin concertos...the elegant energy in her phrasing is adorable...contrasts are vivid, the drama is considerable, and the orchestra’s sonic tapestries bring their own special joy.” The Times, 22nd June 2012 ****

“The variety of Op 9 astounds the ear, especially in these feisty readings, which emphasise the folksy roots of the dance movements and lend them an almost funky modernity. The highlight here is the B flat major double concerto — with Judith Steenbrink as second soloist” Sunday Times, 24th June 2012

“The music world is inestimably the better for Rachel Podger...Everything she touches comes to life in a way that is not only satisfying musically but also representative of the human spirit at its most vital...Podger reveals unexpected depth and variety of expression in the music...Podger wears her virtuosity lightly, and the relationship with the Holland Baroque Society players is clearly one of mutual inspiration.” Financial Times, 14th July 2012 *****

“Unlike some of her continental rivals Podger's light bowing and well-judged tempos effortlessly discover the tenderly poetic content of Vivaldi's music, and here that dimension is abundant...Podger's playing radiates expressive warmth and we can only delight in the spontaneous rapport that she feels with the mature idiom of these wonderful concertos.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2012 ****

Vivaldi joined the staff of the Ospedale della Pietà in September 1703 as Maestro di Violin. Established in the 14th century, the Pietà was one of four charitable Venetian orphanages for women supported by the state. Vivaldi’s instrumental chamber works cannot be dated with any certainty, nor do we know for whom they were written. Despite this lack of information, we can surmise he produced them for his pupils at the Pietà, perhaps during the late 1720's and 1730's.

Bach, Telemann and several French composers all explored the chamber concerto medium to a great degree. 18th-century Italian composers, who concentrated on opera, sacred and secular music for the voice, appear to have ignored it, with the exception of Vivaldi. Our modern image of Vivaldi is primarily that of a secular composer, yet much of his work was intended for performances in the church. The importance of sacred music for solo voice in the oeuvre of Vivaldi emerges with a bolds statistic: of his fifty or so extant sacred vocal works, thirty are for solo voice.

These sacred pieces reflect the talents of the orphans at the Ospedale della Pietà, which maintained an allfemale choir and orchestra responsible for the music in its chapel. Despite its ability to perform choral music at a very high standard, the Pietà also laid special emphasis on works for solo voice.

“[Manahan Thomas's] fresh sounding, youthful voice, agile technique and secure intonation are a delight and are qualities that well serve the sometimes theatrical demands of Vivaldi's virtuoso writing...the interspersed instrumental concerots are played with vitality and finesse. Here is a disc from Florilegium that should disappoint few readers and it deserves to do well.” BBC Music Magazine, March 2012 *****

“The group's sound is less extroverted than many of its European contemporaries, but unbridled flamboyance would not be appropriate in this programme of sacred vocal music and concertos in the ecclesiastical manner...Overall, the stylish performances on this effectively programmed and well-recorded collection make a strong case for a nuanced and relatively understated approach to Vivaldi.” bbc.co.uk, 4th April 2012

“Elin Manahan Thomas is a youthful, bright and clean soloist with a strong core to the voice, a good instinct for when to apply vibrato and the technical agility required for throwing off Vivaldi's more virtuoso passages.” Gramophone Magazine, February 2012

“Manahan Thomas manages all with pleasing athleticism, great textural clarity and an avoidance of anything in the way of intrusive mannerism. She and the sympathetic support provided by Florilegium are sensible to Vivaldi's deftly portrayed images complementing the text...All is played with finesse and affection by soloists and ripienists alike.” International Record Review, January 2012

Vivaldi: Il cimento dell'armonia e dell'inventione - 12 concerti, Op. 8

Vivaldi: Il cimento dell'armonia e dell'inventione - 12 concerti, Op. 8

Pavlo Beznosiuk (violin & director)

Avison Ensemble

This is the highly-anticipated second recording in the Avison Ensemble’s Baroque series, which includes the complete recording of Antonio Vivaldi’s virtuosic violin concertos by the outstanding period instrument orchestra.

Directed by Pavlo Beznosiuk, Britain’s foremost Baroque violin virtuosi, the ensemble presents an insightful performance of the masterpiece that is brimming with energy.

Vivaldi’s Concerti Opus 8 includes The Four Seasons which is, without a doubt, Vivaldi’s best-known work.

Each of the twelve concertos is extremely demanding and Beznosiuk’s virtuosity permeates throughout each performance.

The thematic elements within each innovative work results in a collection that is colourful, fresh and emotionally charged. Opus 8 is a true testament of Vivaldi’s ability for invention and variation.

Formed in 1985, the Ensemble has attracted great critical acclaim. The Guardian commented: “I’d take the Avison Ensemble over Karajan…any day”.

The Avison Ensemble comprises some of Europe's leading Baroque musicians, including artists from The Hague, Germany, France, Austria and London, with international soloists from all over the globe.

Pavlo Beznosiuk, the UK's foremost baroque violin virtuoso, is in demand as a soloist and orchestral leader performing regularly with the Academy of Ancient Music and Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.

“Beznosiuk is soloist-director, all flinty trills and silky legato in The Four Seasons and pithy grace in the D and G minor Concertos. Alternating archlute and guitar and harpsichord and organ respectively, Paula Chateauneuf and Roger Hamilton pinpoint the constant play of light central to Vivaldi's music. Delicious.” The Independent on Sunday, 6th November 2011

“Beznosiuk and his crack ensemble have produced a modern set second to none. Playing is stylish, colourful and warm” Classical Music, 19th November 2011 ****

“this is a Seasons which mostly keeps dramatic overstatement in check...this excellent UK-based ensemble show[s] why it is rapidly gaining respect as one of the finest period-instrument bands of our time, mercifully bereft of novelty factor or proselytizing zeal and offering up performances which are as entertaining, compelling and colourful as they are authoritative and polished...A very impressive addition to the discography of this fine group.” International Record Review, January 2012

“I've always admired the suavity and subtle imaginative colouring of the Avison Ensemble's performances...Here Vivaldi's grosser programmatic intentions are made the subject of speculation rather than plain realisation...Beznosiuk's playing is a marvel both here and throughout the remaining concertos...and at one with an ensemble which likewise responds to this music with a genuine freshness and intelligence.” Gramophone Magazine, March 2012

“this rendition is played on period instruments, which have often come to mean strong attack, primary colours and sharply articulated phrasing. Not here. The Avison Ensemble takes a gentler approach...Beznosiuk has plainly chosen an approach that suits his naturally mellifluous style. There's little of the rubato that has become such a feature of Baroque playing, and the continuo is often unobtrusive” BBC Music Magazine, October 2012 ***
