Weber: Der Freischütz

Weber: Der Freischütz

Christine Brewer (Agathe), Sally Matthews (Ännchen), Lars Woldt (Kaspar), Simon O’Neill (Max), Stephan Loges (Ottokar/Zamiel), Martin Snell (Kuno), Gidon Saks (A Hermit), Marcus Farnsworth (Kilian), Lucy Hall (Bridesmaids)

London Symphony Orchestra & Chorus, Sir Colin Davis

Sir Colin Davis conducts the London Symphony Orchestra and Chorus and a stellar cast of soloists in a concert performance of Weber’s eerily fantastical opera, 'Der Freischütz'.

'Der Freischütz' is heralded as one of the cornerstones of Romantic opera, drawing on traditional German folk tunes and elements of Romanticism for the first time in the history of opera. The evocative and colourful orchestration is particularly impressive in the '‘Wolf’s Glen’ scene: often considered the most gruesomely expressive rendering of evil to be found in a musical score!

All three main soloists are well established on LSO Live: Opera News declared the Verdi Requiem (LSO00683), featuring Christine Brewer, as "one of the finest recordings the work has ever received". Sally Matthews, who has performed regularly with Sir Colin Davis, was praised in her role in Haydn's 'Creation' (LSO0628). Simon O’Neill’s previous appearance on the label, in the title role of Verdi's 'Otello' (LSO0700) saw much critical acclaim, and confirmation that "he is the best heroic tenor to emerge over the last decade" The Telegraph.

“The joys of the performance lie in the way the acoustical demands of the work have been met” Financial Times, 11th May 2013

“Over the decades, Davis’s tempi have become more measured, but the Wolf’s Glen scene still has spook factor aplenty...Chorus and orchestra are the stars here.” Sunday Times, 12th May 2013

“a moving testament to the late Sir Colin Davis, as well as a thrilling performance in its own right...The chorus, especially in the Wolf's Glen, enthralls, as does the orchestra, rising to every challenge, urgent or lyrical, heroic or poetic. Davis, as ever, balances unrushed tempi with moments of raw excitement and aural extravagance” The Observer, 11th May 2013

“the love [Davis] felt toward Der Freischütz can be felt in almost every bar...there is nothing galumphing here, and the LSO make themselves happily rustic whenever the music swings that way...The vocal cast? Always decent, sometimes compelling.” The Times, 10th May 2013 ****

Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Alexander Janiczek

The multi-award-winning Scottish Chamber Orchestra returns with Weber Wind Concertos, the sixteenth album in its celebrated series with Linn. This recording gives the internationally acclaimed principal musicians a chance to dazzle in Weber’s virtuosic and thrilling concertos.

The Clarinet Concerto is one of the cornerstones of the clarinet repertoire.

For this performance Peter Whelan has reconstructed a version of the 1822 Bassoon Concerto score rather than employing the commonly used 1865 version.

In a unique twist Alec Frank-Gemmill performs his own version of the cadenza in the virtuosic Horn Concertino famous for its chromatic pitches and the requirement of multiphonic chords.

The SCO has an impressive recording history including a Grammy-nominated set of Brahms Symphonies, winning the Orchestral category of the BBC Awards in 2009 and a 2011 ECHO Klassik Award for its Mozart recordings, in addition to much critical acclaim.

Spanish clarinettist Maximiliano Martin is rapidly establishing himself as one of the most exciting and charismatic musicians of his generation.

Peter Whelan, one of Europe’s leading exponents of historical and modern bassoon, won a Gramophone Award for his recording of Vivaldi bassoon concertos with La Serenissima.

Alec Frank-Gemmill is much in demand as a soloist and is also frequently invited to play principal horn with orchestras such as the London Philharmonic and the Philharmonia.

“There must have been astonishing wind players in early 19th-century Germany. And after hearing the irresistible concertos that Carl Maria von Weber penned for them, one can imagine what moody, flamboyant characters they were.” The Times, 15th September 2012 ****

“I especially enjoyed Alec Frank-Gemmill's cheeky handling of the runs and decorations in the Horn Concertino” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2012

“Most clarinettists accept the revisions carried out by Barmann but Martin Spangenburg keeps strictly to the letter of Weber's score. He is a fine player, and there is much to admire in his perofrmances, but the recessed orchestral sound, with the strings lacking in bite, hinders the music-making from taking wing.” BBC Music Magazine, November 2012 ****

“When you hear Peter Whelan play the Bassoon Concerto, you’ll forgive Weber anything; his is such an expressive, plangent sound...Both [clarinet works] are dispatched with wit and fire by Maximiliano Martín...This is a beguiling CD; feelgood music of the best sort” The Arts Desk, 1st December 2012

Karl–Heinz Steffens (clarinet)

Bamberger Symphoniker, Radoslaw Szulc

The brilliant clarinettist Karl-Heinz Steffens has been a principal member of the Berliner Philharmoniker for many years. Here he performs exciting romantic repertoire with “soulful torrents of melody.” The Bamberg Symphony Orchestra’s recent Mahler cycle has received excellent reviews.

“the soloist's tone, dynamics and tuning are compellingly subtle. It's a very German dark Wald ('wood') and there are demons in it as well as clowns.” Gramophone Magazine, February 2012

“These are impeccably prepared performances, technically excellent, with spotless intonation and Germanic tone at its finest...Although this is undeniably brilliant playing there is no flashiness here, Steffens relying on evenness of tone and technique to make his points. It may seem old-fashioned and to some extent it is: this is above all for listeners seeking a dependable account of these pillars of the clarinet repertoire, beautifully played” International Record Review, January 2012

Oberon Overture

Although celebrated as the father of German Romantic opera, Carl Maria von Weber is today generally known for one opera alone: Der Freischütz. However the overtures of his other operas and music for stage plays have survived the test of time and are popular concert additions.

The present disc includes ten of these gems, from the overture to Weber’s first surviving opera Peter Schmoll und seine Nachbarn – composed at the age of fifteen – to that of Oberon, written in London for Covent Garden less than two months before his death from tuberculosis, aged 39.

The team of Jean-Jacques Kantorow and the Tapiola Sinfonietta have recorded numerous discs for BIS, by composers as diverse as Saint-Saëns, Mozart, Shostakovich and Rautavaara as well as Weber.
