Two spectacular gala concerts from the stage of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, are brought together here in their unforgettable glory. In the 1993 Winter Gala, world-leading singers (including Plácido Domingo, Dmitri Hvorostovsky and Kiri Te Kanawa) and dancers (including Darcey Bussell, Lesley
Collier, and Irek Mukhamedov) celebrate the music of Tchaikovsky, in highlights from such opera and ballet favourites as The Queen of Spades and Eugene Onegin, The Nutcracker and The Sleeping Beauty. In the famously glittering 1996 gala concert, Domingo is joined by a cast of opera stars including Angela
Gheorghiu, Roberto Alagna and Susan Graham. Asher Fisch conducts this programme of great opera arias by composers including Bizet, Massenet, Gounod, Mozart and Donizetti.
These classic recordings are preserved in their original Standard Definition and 4:3 picture format, capturing The Royal Opera and The Royal Ballet at a memorable period in their long history.

The Royal Ballet - Gala Performances
The creation of The Royal Ballet with its 130 dancers and its own school is one of the great romances of the theatre. Yet it started, in a most unlikely fashion in 1931, with six dancers attached to an opera house in an unfashionable and, to theatre goers, an unknown area of London. The rest as of course is history. This fine 2CD collection features recordings made by the Royal Opera House Orchestra, of some of the finest ballet music under the baton of maestro Ernest Ansermet. These recordings were made in 1957 at the legendary venue of Kingsway Hall.

Zhang Guoli (presenter)
China National Centre for the Performing Arts Orchestra and Chorus, Lu Jia
Unlike any other composer Giuseppe Verdi illuminates the great emotions and opulent melodies of the Italian opera. Created exclusively for the occasion of the celebrated composer’s 200th birthday, Beijing’s most important opera house, the National Centre for the Performing Arts, presents an exceptional gala: Viva Verdi. It features stars from the opera world such as Dilbèr or Roberto Scandiuzzi as they perform the best moments from Verdi’s operas and his Messa da Requiem in a visually stunning production by director Hugo de Ana. As the narrator of Viva Verdi, actor Zhang Guoli sheds more light on the composer behind the brilliant music. An international festival for opera fans, which once again gives emphasis to the reputation of the National Centre for the Performing Arts as “the most prestigious venue of its kind in China” (nytimes.com).
