Stephen HoughSir Stephen Hough is one of the most distinctive artists of his generation, combining a distinguished career as a pianist with those of a composer and writer. Published by Josef Weinberger, Hough has composed works for orchestra, choir, chamber ensemble, organ, harpsichord, and piano solo. The recent release of Mirabilis: The Music of Stephen Hough on Orchard Classics, celebrates Hough’s compositional output in works for choir and organ, performed by the London Choral Sinfonia, organist James Orford, and conductor Michael Waldron. In conjunction with the album release we have gathered together Hough's sheet music works that are featured on the album including original compositions and arrangements of popular tunes, such as Danny Boy and Ding, dong merrily on high. A Choral Album for SATB Chorus

These four a cappella settings, written at different times and for different circumstances, share in common a December theme, from the preparation for Christmas of ‘Advent Calendar’ to the ‘Gate’ of the New Year. The latter poem was made famous when King George VI used it as part of his Christmas broadcast in the dark war days of 1939. The two carols in the middle are amongst the most sung words in the Western world but set here in very different ways to the original familiar, strophic tunes.
