Stuart Beer’s First Service, written some thirty years ago for the trebles at Manchester Cathedral, has a Magnificat and Nunc dimittis that has, over the years, attained mythical stature. It is regularly preformed in a number of cathedrals around the country, but it has never been published – until now. The RSCM are delighted to announce that Stuart Beer came to the RSCM office yesterday to sign a publishing contract, and The First Service will be the first work to be published. It is for two treble parts and organ, and much of the writing is canonical, which makes it easy to learn. It is, quite simply, a very beautiful piece of music.
