The release of Concerti Grossi Opus 6 marks the beginning of Linn and The Avison Ensemble’s commitment to record Corelli’s complete chamber music. Arcangelo Corelli was one of the shining geniuses of the baroque era and his twelve Concerti Grossi are considered among the very best of Italian baroque output. The twelve Concerti Grossi demonstrate an austere grandeur and a never-ending invention which is never routine. The Avison Ensemble will release three further recordings of Corelli in 2013 which will mark the 300th anniversary of the composer’s death. Known as the ‘Father of the Concerto Grosso’ Corelli showcased the form’s potential, popularised it, and wrote the first great music for it, although he did not actually invent the form! Formed in 1985, the Ensemble has attracted great critical acclaim. The Guardian commented: “I’d take the Avison Ensemble over Karajan…any day”. The Avison Ensemble comprises some of Europe's leading Baroque musicians, including artists from The Hague, Germany, France, Austria and London, with international soloists from all over the globe. Pavlo Beznosiuk, the UK's foremost baroque violin virtuoso, is in demand as a soloist and orchestral leader performing regularly with the Academy of Ancient Music and Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. “What emerges in Pavlo Beznosiuk's supple performance with the Avison is music of immense suavity and elegance – from the enchanting Largo of the 6th, to the tender pastoral of the Christmas Concerto.” The Independent, 16th September 2012 “The Avison Ensemble offer suave, personable performances, allowing this exquisitely engaging music to do its own work.” Sunday Times, 14th October 2012 “The nicely sprung playing of the Avison Ensemble under Pavlo Beznosiuk conveys the music’s vitality in a way that manages to be both relaxed and purposefully pointed” The Irish Times, November 2012 **** “these new performances are certainly part of the competition, supple and elegant, perfectly in harmony with the suave if at times austere character of the music and, above all, architecturally shaped with subtlety and finesse...the sense of ensemble is faultless and, in the faster movements, breathtakingly impressive.” Gramophone Magazine, December 2012 “the Avison Ensemble eschews the flashy bravura of some of its competitors in favour of a subtle graciousness that seems to capture essence of Corelli's polished style. They point up the fleet dance rhythms with lightweight bowing and clean articulation” BBC Music Magazine, April 2013 **** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

The partnership of Neville Marriner and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields is possibly the most recorded of all partnerships in recorded classical music. This collection brings together three of their very first recordings: A RECITAL, A SECOND RECITAL and ITALIAN CONCERTOS, the three LPs receiving their first complete release on CD. The first two were called ‘Recitals’ in the manner of concert programs, mixing concerti grossi with solo concertos, with the Academy’s principals as soloists. Crispness of ensemble, stylish delivery, flexible and febrile performances, and rich-toned recordings were their hallmarks. This pioneering 2CD set is issued in celebration of the Academy’s 50th anniversary this year and these recordings form part of a series of Marriner reissues on Eloquence. Three of Marriner’s earliest recordings with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, including his very first, reissued on CD for the first time. Forms part of a series of recordings with Marriner and the Academy. “When a British ensemble records a program like this, it sticks its neck out in no uncertain manner. Consciously or unconsciously it challenges every chamber orchestra from Aachen to Zagreb … Here is nearly an hour’s music, played with precision, care, consummate musicianship, and with more sense of style than all the chamber orchestras in Europe put together … Neville Marriner and his Academy are to be congratulated on a magnificent disc debut, and I have no hesitation in declaring this to be one of the three or four most outstanding items in the L’Oiseau-Lyre catalogue” Gramophone Magazine (A Recital’: Corelli, Torelli, Locatelli, Albicastro, Handel) “There is nothing anonymous about this playing; it positively tingles with life” Gramophone Magazine (A Second Recital’: Manfredini, Albinoni, Avison, Handel, Telemann) | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

Arcangelo Corelli (1653–1713) was nothing less than a musical pioneer, a champion of the violin’s potential as a solo instrument and an immense influence on the composers who followed him, J.S. Bach and Handel included. As a virtuoso violinist, he wielded an unprecedented level of skill; as a composer, he was enormously popular throughout Europe. Although the Italian composer’s legacy has been somewhat overshadowed in modern times, the 12 Concerti Grossi that comprise this recording are thoroughly worthy of rediscovery, and earned Corelli the description of ‘father of the concerto grosso’. Indeed, he was one of the first composers to use the term, and established many of the genre’s recognisable features. The mixture of concerti da chiesa (church concertos, which alternate slow and fast tempi) and concerti da camera (chamber concertos, similar to the dance suite) demonstrates the imagination, innovation and versatility that his fellow composers so admired. Although the vast popularity that Corelli enjoyed in his lifetime may have declined over the centuries, the influence of his 12 Concerti Grossi is undeniable, and can be felt in later concertos by composers like Geminiani and Vivaldi, not to mention Handel’s majestic Concerti Grossi Op.6. Drawn from Brilliant Classics’ criticallyacclaimed edition of Corelli’s complete works, there is much for listeners to discover and enjoy in these recordings, which feature outstanding readings by a leading period-instrument ensemble, Musica Amphion, led from the harpsichord by Pieter-Jan Belder. | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |
