State of Mexico Symphony Orchestra, Orquesta Filarmónica de la cuidad de México, Enrique Batiz Mexican classical or art music of the 20th century has been dominated by expressions of nationalistic feelings. Ponce, a pioneer in this approach used a wide range of folk music in his compositions. The next generation, with Chávez being the most influential, attempted to return to earlier Aztec sources. This music is about assimilating elements from several sources.
There are many more later nationalist composers, including quite a few pupils of Chávez’s. For instance Moncayo and Jiménez. In their work they integrate Mexican elements within traditional large forms like the symphony.
