Heifetz’s series of arrangements and transcriptions for violin and piano reveal just how tasteful and refined a musician he was. Crafted with precision, and played with passion, they are alive with his stylistic awareness. Whether in his Rachmaninov transcriptions or in Robert Russell Bennett’s A Song Sonata, Heifetz lavished equal care on these gems and they enriched his concert programmes. They also proved hugely popular on disc – thirteen pieces come from a 1960 LP famously called ‘Heifetz’ – and their variety, virtuosity and sheer beauty remain imperishable examples of the art of the violin.

“It's party time. Everyone, not least the radiantly smiling conductor, is bent on enjoying themselves...This is among the most thoughtful and poetic accounts of the Concerto that I've heard. There's nothing superficial or preconceived...It is this performance which gives the DVD its raison d'etre, one which in half a century will be viewed with the same kind of interest as film of Moiseiwitsch, Cortot et al is viewed today.” Gramophone Magazine, December 2012

Simon Johnson (organ)

Recorded in Stereo and 5.1 Surround Sound.

Contains DVD and a CD of the recital sound track.

Bonus Features include a tour of the organ and its history.

This new DVD and CD from Priory is the fifth in a series of organ recitals filmed in Britain’s great cathedrals. The programme is designed around the history of the building, and contains in particular a poignant reminder of the blitz in 1940, with the music of Samuel Barber’s Adagio.

Filmed beside the new nave console this is also the first recording since the instrument’s restoration; also seen are numerous pictures from inside and outside the Cathedral including the crypt and the whispering gallery, together with illustrations of the Great Fire of London. The music has been specially chosen to provide links with organists connected with St Paul’s, including Maurice Greene, Hubert Parry, Felix Mendelssohn and Georg Frederick Handel. Jeremiah Clarke’s famous Trumpet Voluntary was recorded to show off the west end royal trumpets – (and for hi-fi buffs listening in 5.1 surround sound these will be heard only from the rear speakers.) This we believe is Priory’s greatest DVD to date in terms of technical brilliance and recorded sound – every available trumpet and tuba combination has been demonstrated by Simon Johnson in this recital, and his visual ‘talk-through’ of Norman Cocker’s ‘Tuba Tune’ on one of the bonus features is fascinating both for students and general listeners alike.

“One could not wish for a more genial or engaging guide than the Cathedral's organist, Simon Johnson. A brilliant and sensitive musician, his deeply satisfying programme more than does justice to the vast five-manual Willis/Mander organ and its awe-inspiringly cavernous acoustic...Spine-tingling sublime.” Gramophone Magazine, December 2010

“This is a remarkable demonstration of what is achievable on a DVD recording of an organ concert. The playing sparkles throughout, the sound and picture quality are immaculate and the camerawork is imaginative and engaging. However, the real triumph is the marriage of the audio and the visual...the programme has been planned in so much detail and with such thoughtfulness as to make the connections truly meaningful for the viewer.” International Record Review, March 2011

and adaptations of works by Ravel, Borodin, Luigini and Schumann

This collection has been prepared with three main aims: firstly to prove that the so-called boundaries between light and classical music are not as insurmountable as some people seem to imagine; secondly to illustrate that many composers, who may usually be associated with more serious works, also had their lighter moments; and thirdly to offer several examples of the tasteful way in which arrangers of the 20th century adapted the classics to make them more instantly appealing to their audience. For many years such ‘tampering with the classics’ was banned by the BBC in Britain, although commercial recordings could be freely purchased. However a lack of broadcasts obviously affected sales, which partly explains why such recordings were more common in the United States than in Britain. Among the leading US musicians who often strayed into classical territory were David Carroll, Andre Kostelanetz, Percy Faith, Clebanoff and even Ray Conniff. They are joined by Charles Williams, Angela Morley and other familiar figures on the UK scene.

Alexander Korsantia (piano)

Since winning the Arthur Rubinstein Competition and the Sidney Piano Competition, Alexander Korsantia’s career has taken him to many of the world’s major concert halls, collaborating with renowned conductors such as Valery Gergiev, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Christoph Eschenbach, Yuri Bashmet and Paavo Jarvi and orchestras as the Chicago Symphony, the Kirov, Israel Philharmonic and Oslo Philharmonic. He has also given many recitals with renowned violinist Vadim Repin. Born in Tbilisi, Georgia, Korsantia has lived in the United States since 1992. He now resides in Boston where he is Professor of Piano at the New England Conservatory. Enjoying great popularity in his country of birth, he performed at the inauguration of Georgian President Saakashvili in 2004.

Korsantia’s live recordings, on two discs, present an attractive programme carefully chosen from recitals he has given since 1995 in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Toulouse, Boston and New York. The first CD features arrangements of Bach by Busoni, Egon Petri and Myra Hess’s famous version of the chorale Jesu, Joy of Men's Desiring, two Piano Sonatas by Haydn and Mozart’s Sonata in C major, KV330 and 20th century Russian and Georgian music. Korsantia has rearranged Gwido Agosti’s magnificent 1934 piano transcription of the last three pieces from The Firebird Suite to reflect more of Stravinsky's original orchestral sound. Stravinsky’s Tango is followed by Giya Kancheli’s Instead of Tango originally written in 1996 for violin, piano, bandoneon and double bass. Kancheli’s own piano arrangement is dedicated to three Georgian pianists, one of them Alexander Korsantia. The second disc is devoted to Sergei Prokofiev: his Pastoral Sonatina and Vision Fugitive, No 11, Op 22 bookend the Piano Sonata No 7 in B flat major and the substantial Piano Sonata No 8.
