Philippe Graffin (violin) & Claire Désert (piano/piano luthéal)

Philippe Graffin is the latest violinist to join ONYX, after several outstanding discs of rare French and English repertoire for labels such as Hyperion and Avie. This new recital brings together the mesmerising intensity of Gypsy violin playing with classical composers’ response to it.

Released to coincide with a notable novel called Hungarian Dances by writer and journalist Jessica Duchen. She explains: “When I asked Philippe Graffin, a treasured friend and colleague, to check the manuscript of Hungarian Dances for violinistic errors, I little dreamed he’d respond by making this recording: a CD inspired by the novel. Yet the novel was partly inspired by a CD – Philippe and Claire’s beautiful recital ‘In the Shade of Forests’, [Avie Records, rave reviews worldwide] evoking the spirit of the archetypal wandering Gypsy violinist”.

Philippe’s recital is loosely based around the book but is also designed to work as a programme in its own right with several pieces chosen only for the recording including rarities by such composers as Von Vecsey, Hubay, Scarlatescu and Arthur Hartmann.

Claire Désert is well-known in France for several solo CDs for FNAC and other labels and here plays both piano and piano luthéal, the ‘prepared piano’ that Ravel had made for Tzigane in 1919 and which imitates the sound of a Hungarian cimbalom to striking effect in many of these pieces.

“Very ably abetted by Claire Désert, Graffin does his utmost to conjure up the style and effect of Hungarian gypsy fiddling. His account of Monti's Csárdás is embellished with improvised ornaments and fancy tricks - a magnificently evocative impersonation... an enthralling, exceptional recital, to be thoroughly recommended.” Gramophone Magazine, February 2009

“A delightful programme of violin sweetmeats with a gypsyesque flavour… Throughout, Graffin blends the music's various flavours with mouth-watering panache. Bravo!” BBC Music Magazine, May 2009 *****

‘From my father, Hu Wei Ming, a violinist and professor at the Sichuan Conservatory in Chengdu, I learned all the Violin duets by BÉLA BARTÓK at a very early age, and came to love them. When I discovered the close relationship between Bartók’s Hungarian folk traditions and the folk traditions of China, I was greatly surprised: the peasant songs of Sichuan’s minority people, the Yi, were very much like Hungarian folk music!’ Zen Hu These early discoveries were of decisive importance in leading me to undertake an unusual musical journey, together with Ning Feng. We hope that with this CD, we can encourage and support the mutual understanding between China and Europe.’ from liner notes by Zen Hu Zen Hu and Ning Feng - both born in Chengdu, China - started their early studies at Sichuan Conservatory of Music. Zen Hu, prize winner at the National Chinese Violin Competition, became at a very young age the first Chinese member of Munich Philharmonic Orchestra.

Ning Feng, recently won First Prize as well as two other special prizes at the prestigious 51st Paganini International Violin Competition in Genova.

The world knows Bela Bartok as one of the twentieth century's great composers. Fewer people know of the many miniature masterpieces he composed for young musicians, and even fewer realize that he was a brilliant and diligent scholar of Eastern European folk music. Working 50 years before the term was even coined, he is now considered one of the first great ethnomusicologists, in addition to his formidable compositional achievements. In 1905, shortly after his first contacts with the "pure" music of Hungarian peasants, Bartok met Zoltan Kodaly, a fellow Hungarian composer one year his junior, who was also deeply interested in authentic folk music. Together they founded the Hungarian Music Society and they collaborated in collecting and editing Hungarian folksongs for publication. Close friends throughout their lives, they often performed and championed each other's music. The performers on this recording have endeavored to be true to the original spirit of the music of Bartok and Kodaly in arranging for the group. Sometimes these arrangements have a comparatively logical quality, such as Bartok's Rumanian Dances played by a folk band with cimbalom, whistles and recorders, guitars, banjo and bass. In other cases the sounds are more unusual, such as the arrangement of Kodaly's Ave Maria for voice and low pennywhistles.

This set of 50 CDs contains some of Sir Yehudi Menuhin's most celebrated EMI recordings, made during the 70-year period that he recorded for the Company, and commemorates the tenth anniversary of his death on 12 March 1999.

Arguably the best-known classical musician of the 20th century, Yehudi Menuhin was born on 22 April 1916 in New York City. In 1918 his family moved to San Francisco where he had his first violin lessons, aged four, with Sigmund Anker. At seven he gave his first public performance accompanied by his then teacher, Louis Persinger. A year later, in 1925, he gave his first full-length recital, also with Persinger. 1926 saw him make his New York début and later that year he gave a performance of Lalo's Symphonie espagnole with the San Francisco Orchestra.

In 1927, at the age of ten, Menuhin made his European début in Paris playing with the Lamoureux Orchestra under Paul Paray. Back in New York he gave his first concerto concert with the New York Symphony Orchestra under Fritz Busch and in 1928 he made his first recording for the Victor Company. 1929 was equally eventful for the young Menuhin: he was given a Stradivarius violin; made his Berlin début with the Berlin Philharmonic under Bruno Walter; began studies with Adolf Busch; he gave his début in London and made his first HMV recording.

In 1931 Menuhin made his first concerto recording, Bruch Concerto No.1 in London for HMV and in 1932, at the age of 16, he made what was to become one of the most iconic classical recordings of all time when he went to EMI's new Abbey Road Studios to record the Elgar Concerto with the composer and the London Symphony Orchestra. This event put Menuhin firmly on the international map as one of the great violin virtuosi of the century and he continued to be a prolific recording artist for EMI, both as violinist and conductor, for the rest of his long career.
